Everton signing this 28-year-old goal machine valued at €25m would add life to their otherwise boring attack

Why Everton should go all out to sign Duvan Zapata in January

Back in 2017, Everton were linked with then Napoli striker Duvan Zapata, who was valued at €25m.

Duvan Zapata, 28, was one of the revelations of last season’s Serie A, firing Atalanta into the Champions League for the first time last season by scoring 28 goals. And it looks like his good run has continued this campaign too, with the Colombian hitman already hitting six goals in seven Serie A games.

It’ll be very difficult to prise the 28-year-old away to the Premier League as Atalanta are competing in the Champions League this season but Everton should definitely give a shot in January.

Everton have some seriously exciting players in Richarlison, Bernard, Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi, yet they haven’t enjoyed the start they would have loved to this season. Marco Silva is under tremendous pressure as his side have lost four consecutive games in the Premier League. He faces the risk of axe if things don’t change quickly on the pitch for good.

If Silva manages to sustain the difficult period by guiding the Toffees to a good run of results, he should prioritise signing a striker in January to solve his goalscoring woes.

Moise Kean and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are exciting young strikers but they aren’t quite ready to lead the attack, week in and week out. Surely they could do with an experienced striker in the squad and Duvan Zapata fits the bill.

Zapata would be a straight upgrade on Cenk Tosun, who has fallen out of favour under Silva this season. He has been prolific for Atalanta, impressing with his all-rounded displays since last season.

The 28-year-old is a physical centre-forward who can hold the ball up and link play as well, meaning he has the physical attributes to adapt to Premier League football.

The arrival of the ex-Napoli forward would certainly restore some optimism at Goodison Park.

Not only that, but Zapata also has the quality to have a big impact on Merseyside. The burly striker is dangerous in and around the box, knows where the back of the net is and can also set up his teammates with incisive passes in the final third.

All in all, the 28-year-old could exactly be the kind of striker Everton needs to solve their goalscoring conundrum.

Verdict

The Colombia international has played most of his senior football in Italy but a new challenge could tempt him to the Premier League. Signing Zapata in January is exactly the sort of statement which would prove that Everton are indeed serious about breaking into the top six.
