Everton splurging to sign this 25-year-old Serie A hitman would help overturn disappointing start

Why Everton should make a move for Arkadiusz Milik in January

Back in July 2016, the Liverpool Echo had claimed Everton were interested in signing Arkadiusz Milik from Ajax but the striker snubbed the chance to join the Merseysiders. However, Napoli came calling a month later and he left Ajax for the Serie A side.

Arkadiusz Milik, 25, has had some turbulent seasons over the years due to injury problems, but after a strong 2018/19 season, his career is back on track. The Polish international scored 17 goals for the Naples-based club in Serie A last season. This was by far his best season in Naples and this campaign he has scored two goals after three games.

Despite the striker having a bad injury record, Everton must reignite their interest and take a gamble on him when the transfer window reopens in a few months’ time.

Everton haven’t enjoyed a bright start to the new season, regardless of making some exciting signings over the summer. A disappointing start plus a couple of injury problems may well force the Toffees to spend again in January.

Adding an experienced striker would be a smart move, with their current options, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Moise Kean and Cenk Tosun all failing to get going so far. There won’t be lots of options in that position that Everton could target in January, yet Marcel Brands and Marco Silva must target someone relatively young but experienced enough to shoulder the goalscoring responsibility.

In that regard, Arkadiusz Milik would fit the bill perfectly at Goodison Park. The Pole’s signature would make a great deal of sense, especially considering he’d be arriving at Everton as an established presence. He’s still just 25 years old, 6ft 1inches tall, and whilst being physical, he’s also mobile enough to counter-attack through.

Milik is a left-footed forward who has a strong physical presence, but is technically capable when holding the ball up and a beast in the air too. He is a lethal finisher and would give the Merseyside outfit a true number nine capable of replacing Romelu Lukaku. The former Ajax star excels when leading the line as a lone forward meaning he is perfect for Silva’s 4-2-3-1 system at Everton.

The Toffees are crying out for a big centre-forward to lead the attack, which would allow the likes of Richarlison, Bernard and Gylfi Sigurdsson to get back their mojo. Milik could exactly be that player, a frightening goalscorer who would be a straight upgrade on the out of favour Cenk Tosun.

Verdict

Napoli would ask for a lot of money for Milik in January; however, the price would definitely be worth paying for Marco Silva’s club.
