Everton capturing this top-class Ligue 1 star would be an absolute coup in the summer and Silva must get him

Everton opinion: Should Toffees sign Florian Thauvin?

When Everton appointed Marco Silva, few fans would have thought the club would end up on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline against Newcastle United. But that’s the way it happened as Silva’s team collapsed and handed the Magpies the win.

However, this isn’t the first time the club has struggled to perform, losing four out of their last six games. This includes losses to Wolves, Manchester City and Watford, winning only two games against relegation-threatened Cardiff City and Huddersfield.

Things have gone from bad to worse despite them spending very intelligently over the summer, reinforcing key positions. But the club’s failure to add a striker to suit Marco Silva’s style of play has played a part in their downfall.

Furthermore, Everton are in 11th place and seven points behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, who sit in pole position in the race for seventh place.

Yet, despite all their issues this season, the Toffees’ problems are not out of their reach and are completely fixable with a few more additions over the summer.

A winger should be on top of their shortlist given the shape of things on the flanks. Former Arsenal star Theo Walcott’s sudden decline has put the club in serious trouble, despite the presence of Bernard, Ademola Lookman and Richarlison.

Lookman has struggled to make an impact, while Bernard is still adapting to the Premier League after his summer move. That leaves the club with just Richarlison but the Brazilian has been in fine form, scoring 10 goals in the Premier League alone.

His tally won’t be enough next season and that’s why Everton should target Florian Thauvin. The 26-year-old should be well versed with the Premier League given the fact that he spent one season with Newcastle United.

However, he struggled with the Premier League’s ferocity and the Magpies had issues with his attitude, which caused a rift. Eventually, he left the club and returned to Marseille, which is where he has flourished.

A winger by trade, Thauvin is very direct and loves having the ball at his feet, combining agility with exceptional close control. The 26-year-old is very dangerous in the final third. He finished last season with 22 goals and 11 assists in the Ligue 1.

Conclusion

For Everton, it’s a move they have to make and though there may be doubts about Thauvin’s mentality, the 26-year-old has matured as revealed in an interview (Guardian).

It’s time for the Toffees to fight the Premier League’s big boys and adding the Frenchman will help them achieve that.
