9 goals, 44 games – Everton would be wise to offload this lacklustre 28-year-old at the earliest and here’s why

Why Everton shouldn’t think twice to offload Cenk Tosun

According to a report from the Sky Sports, Qatari club Al Gharafa are interested in signing Everton striker Cenk Tosun.

The transfer window in Qatar does not close until September 30 and Al Gharafa are targeting the Turkish international, who has fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park following the summer signing of Moise Kean.

Al-Gharafa is no stranger to signing high-profile players, having signed experienced Mexico international defender Hector Moreno over the summer, while Wesley Sneijder starred for the club last season.

They are now interested in luring away Cenk Tosun, who didn’t make Everton’s 18-man squad for their defeat at Bournemouth over the weekend.

Tosun had the chance to return to Turkey on loan this summer but turned down multiple offers in order to fight for his place on Marco Silva’s squad. Since arriving at Everton from Besiktas in January 2018, he has endured a tough time in the Premier League.

The striker has scored an underwhelming nine goals in 44 appearances for the Toffees, failing to find the consistency to his game that hasn’t allowed him to nail down a place in Silva’s side.

The 28-year-old has made just one appearance in the EFL Cup this season against Lincoln City and may feel he’s not going to be given a chance unless injury struck. He hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football, with Silva preferring the likes of Moise Kean and Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of him.

Despite being overlooked, the Wetzlar-born star is fit and available for selection. Before the 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium over the weekend, Tosun was on the bench against Wolves. It is pretty clear that Silva doesn’t fancy Tosun and is reluctant to hand him any game time ahead of talented young duo Kean and Calvert-Lewin.

Everton face a busy schedule in the coming weeks as they look to compete across multiple competitions this season. Tosun perhaps deserves a chance but it doesn’t seem likely he’ll get one unless he can show some significant signs of improvement on the training ground.

Verdict

With very limited game time so far this season, it would be no surprise if Tosun is open to the idea of joining Al Gharafa amid interest. The striker deserves to be playing regular football as he’s in the peak of his powers.

Thus, Everton must offload the Turkish star this month if they do receive a big offer from Al Gharafa.
