Why Federico Chiesa would be an excellent signing for Chelsea
Back in March, the Sun had claimed that Fiorentina attacker Federico Chiesa wanted a move to Premier League club Chelsea. However, a move didn’t materialise during the summer transfer window.
Federico Chiesa, 22, one of Italian football’s exciting young talents, has been a regular fixture for La Viola since making his first-team debut back in 2016.
This season, the 22-year-old has featured in 14 league games for Fiorentina, amassing two goals and three assists. He has also become a regular for the Italy national team.
Chelsea, meanwhile, can splash the cash in January after Frank Lampard was unable to sign players during the summer months due to their FIFA-imposed transfer ban.
As a result, Lampard was forced to rely on youth players like Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount while the club were unable to make any fresh additions to their squad.
Despite his young side showing potential, the Blues’ lack of experience has been a worrying issue and they were beaten 2-0 by Southampton on Boxing Day, the latest in a series of poor results. Lampard enjoyed a promising start to life in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat but after recent performances, the former midfielder must spend in January to reinforce his squad.
Chelsea couldn’t sign a replacement for Eden Hazard in the summer transfer window and Lampard should make it one of his priorities to sign a creative player to replace the goal the Belgian used to provide. In that regard, Federico Chiesa would be an ideal fit at Stamford Bridge.
Capable of playing on either wing or through the middle, Chiesa is currently one of the first names on the team sheet for Vincenzo Montella this season. He has been one of the most productive players for Montella’s Fiorentina side.
The Italy international has averaged 1.3 key passes, 3.9 shots and 1.9 dribbles in Serie A [Courtesy: WhoScored] but what makes him effective is his ability to release the ball early and find teammates in space, making full use of counter-attacking situations.
The 22-year-old is technically strong, as his touches and dribbling skills are neat. Chiesa is deceptive with his movements and can cause a lot of problems for the opposition defenders.
