Crystal Palace signing this Russian prodigy for £15m would be a terrific steal by Hodgson

Why Fyodor Chalov would be a good buy for Crystal Palace

According to a report from The Sun, Crystal Palace have been approached by agents of two Chinese clubs with offers for £32million striker Christian Benteke.

Benteke, 28, has largely struggled at Crystal Palace since his arrival from Liverpool in 2016.

The towering Belgian striker has gone on to score just 19 Premier League goals for the Eagles from 82 appearances. He endured an injury-hit 2018/19 campaign, managing a paltry one goal from 19 appearances in all competitions.

Crystal Palace may be willing to offload Benteke and get around £15m for a player that has royally struggled for form and fitness over the last 12 months.

Should the Eagles sell the Belgium international, Roy Hodgson will be left with just three strikers—Connor Wickham, Alexander Sorloth and Andre Ayew.

Those options simply aren’t enough for a Palace side that struggled for goals last season.

Roy Hodgson’s strikers scored just seven Premier League goals between them last term and five of those came from Michy Batshuayi, who has since returned to parent club Chelsea after a fine loan spell at Selhurst Park.

According to the Daily Mirror, Crystal Palace are preparing a £15million bid for the CSKA Moscow star, Fyodor Chalov, who finished as the top goalscorer in the Russian league last season, scoring 15 times.

The Russian international has been at CSKA since he was eight, and has scored 30 goals in 86 games since making his debut in 2016. He signed a new deal in January to keep him at the VEB Arena until 2022. The main question arises here—should Crystal Palace splash the money to sign Fyodor Chalov?

Without a shadow of a doubt, yes! Chalov is highly-rated in Russia and banged 17 goals in all competitions last term. He even managed to find himself on the score-sheet against Real Madrid during a 3-0 win at Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League group stages, which underlines his unique confidence and ability.

The Russian isn’t just a goalscorer, he also is excellent in link-up play and chance creation for his teammates.

The 21-year-old is a composed finisher in front of goal and has already done a pretty good job of making a name for himself on the big stage, finding the net against tough opposition in the Champions League.

At 21, Chalov has shown a level of maturity that belies his age which could make him a top addition for the Eagles.

Verdict

For a team that has been overly reliant on Wilfried Zaha in recent campaigns, it’s a no-brainer for Hodgson to add some depth and firepower to his attack this summer. And the Palace boss would definitely do a good job by acquiring the services of the highly-rated Fyodor Chalov.
