Leeds signing this influential Rangers star could very well pay off for Marcelo Bielsa

Why Glen Kamara would be a massive coup for Leeds United

According to Football insider (h/t Birmingham Live), Leeds United are the latest club to join the race to sign Glen Kamara, who has been in terrific form for Rangers this season.

Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old Finnish international, while Premier League rivals Brighton, as well as Championship outfit Fulham, are also hot on trail of the Rangers star. (h/t Birmingham Live, Scottish Sun)

However, if the report from Football Insider (h/t Birmingham Live) is to be believed, Leeds United had scouts in attendance to keep an eye on the ex-Arsenal man during Rangers’ 2-0 victory over Porto on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Europa League last week. The Whites are now keen to pursue a keen interest in the influential midfield enforcer.

Kamara, who made only a solitary first-team appearance for Arsenal earlier in his career, found himself lost in the cold at Dundee United but he has enjoyed an incredible resurrection under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard following his move to Ibrox back in January.

Having established himself as a regular fixture in Rangers’ midfield with a string of impressive performances towards the back end of the previous campaign, Kamara has once again hit the ground running this term and has produced arguably some of the best football of his career to date in recent weeks.

As per Whoscored, Glen Kamara averages 0.9 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per game for Rangers this term. The 24-year-old also has an overall pass success rate of 88.8% and produces 0.6 key passes a game.

To that end, it is pretty easy to figure out as to why he has been so instrumental in Rangers’ success in recent times.

Putting things into perspective, Glen Kamara has a contract at Ibrox until 2023 but Leeds United would bag a massive coup if they manage to get their hands on the central midfielder in January or next summer.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion last time around, the West Yorkshire giants once again find themselves in the race for promotion this season under Marcelo Bielsa.

While a striker with proven Championship pedigree should be high on the manager’s wishlist in a bid to achieve a better scoring record, a genuine midfielder like Kamara would also fit the bill.

Despite Kalvin Phillips establishing himself as a rock at the heart of the midfield for the Whites in recent years, it won’t be a bad idea for Bielsa to bring in another bonafide and dynamic ball-winning central midfielder to add another dimension to the midfield ranks.

Adam Forshaw and youngster Jamie Shackleton are more than handy operators in the middle of the park but Kamara’s scintillating form at Ibrox definitely makes him worth a punt for the fallen Yorkshire giants.

Plus, with Phillips constantly attracting widespread interest from the Premier League clubs, most recently Man United (h/t Sun), Leeds might not be able to hold on to their highly-rated academy starlet for too long despite having secured his future with a long-term deal earlier in the season.

Verdict

Glen Kamara’s failure to make the grade at Arsenal earlier in his career could be a bit of a concern as far as his credentials in English football are concerned, but with the 24-year-old firing on all cylinders at Rangers, offering him a return to England seems like a calculated risk that could pay off handsomely for the Whites.

With that in mind, Leeds United’s interest in Glen Kamara certainly makes a lot of sense and Bielsa should not hesitate to break the bank to bring the Finnish enforcer to Elland Road.
