Handing Harry Maguire a new contract is a massive statement of intent from the Foxes
Leicester City have made a positive start to this season, winning two of the four games played. However, the two losses came against last season’s top-six teams, Manchester United and Liverpool. But the Foxes were unfortunate to lose against both teams.
The club should be buoyed now as defender Harry Maguire has penned a fresh five-year contract that will keep him at the King Power Stadium until 2023. After Manchester United chased him vehemently over the summer, Maguire ultimately decided to stay put and will now be aiming to play a crucial role for the club in the coming seasons. (ESPN)
The England defender played all 38 games for the Foxes last season and was crucial for Claude Puel’s side. Maguire is a leader at the back and seems to be getting better with every passing week.
The 25-year-old was in stunning form at the World Cup as well, picking up a goal and an assist in seven appearances as Gareth Southgate’s men finished fourth in Russia. His performances over the last two years have made him a cult figure in the country.
The centre-back is defensively solid and rarely puts a foot wrong in a game. He is excellent at reading the play and ensuring the defence maintains its line at the back. Maguire also poses a massive threat going forward.
He is extremely superior in the air which makes him very dangerous from set-pieces. Every time Leicester win a free-kick, he charges in front for the ball.
Maguire is a mobile player, which doesn’t seem evident from his outlook. He is capable of captaining the club or country very soon. In fact, he also possesses all the qualities to captain the England team some day.
Leicester City have lost Riyad Mahrez to Manchester City, but they have done well to ensure Harry Maguire has stayed with them.
