Man Utd would show a strong statement of intent by signing this 27-year-old La Liga wizard to replace Mata

Why Isco to Man United would be a blockbuster January move

Manchester United must make it one of their top priorities to sign an attacking midfielder in January.

The lack of clear-cut chances being created by the Red Devils has to be a real worry, even just nine games into a long Premier League campaign. There is an evident shortage of creative spark in the midfield and it has already been documented with just 10 goals scored in the nine games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side’s failure to get on the ball and break the lines was arguably the reason most fans are concerned this season, with little to inspire the team from the bench.

Paul Pogba thrives in an advanced role but Solskjaer has used the Frenchman in a double-pivot with Scott McTominay this season.

Juan Mata is the only natural no.10 United have in the squad but he is past his prime and apparently doesn’t suit Solskjaer’s quick, counter-attacking style of play.

Jesse Lingard has been woefully out of form since January, while academy star Angel Gomes isn’t yet ready to start games regularly in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have failed to break teams deploying a low-block system on them with limited players to thread the final pass into the attackers.

Solskjaer clearly needs someone who has the proven ability to unlock deep-lying defences that United have so far struggled to pierce. That being said, they must rekindle their interest in Real Madrid star, Isco.

Back in May, Isco was strongly linked with a move to United. The Spanish international, 27, has struggled for game time this season, making just four La Liga appearances so far. It does not appear as though the attacking midfielder is a key part of Zinedine Zidane’s long-term plans at Santiago Bernabeu.

Perhaps, a move away from Santiago Bernabeu could help him revive his career, and a switch to United could be the ideal destination.

The Red Devils are desperately short of quality in that area of the pitch, with Isco a clear upgrade on struggling players Mata and Lingard. Despite his recent difficulties at Real, the Spaniard has long shown himself to be one of Europe’s top creative players.

The 27-year-old is a specialist set-piece taker, has a fantastic eye for a pass and can score goals of all kinds.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are not getting the service they deserve upfront and Isco could be the man to provide them with opportunities through on goal.

Certainly, Solskjaer needs to get this signing done as the ex-Valencia man could take the Red Devils to the next level if he can get back to his best.

Verdict

Someone with Isco’s quality and experience in winning major trophies could be an ideal addition to blend in with Solskjaer’s young squad.
