Why Leeds United must avoid signing this 16-year-old Scottish prodigy in the summer

Why Leeds United Must Avoid Signing Harry Cochrane

As per a report from The Scottish Sun, Leeds United are interested in signing Heart of Midlothian midfielder Harry Cochrane this summer. However, a recent report from the same publication has also claimed that the Hearts are keen on extending his current deal with the club, so as to prevent other clubs from lurking around. But ever since Andrea Radrizzani took charge of the club, there has been an imminent focus on signing younger stars.

To that end, the 16-year-old Cochrane falls right into that narrative and on paper, it seems like a viable deal. That said, I think it is safe to assume that Leeds fans are fed up with the club investing in players for the future instead of addressing problems that are currently plaguing the team.

They are in dire need of players that can deliver results right now and signing a player like Cochrane will certainly not do much for them in that aspect.

The promising young midfielder is one of the brightest prospects in Scottish football, having broken into Hearts first-team last September. He has been in excellent form for Craig Levein’s side and has even chipped in with a solitary goal and assist so far. He is one of the best young midfielders in Scotland and has been in good form for Hearts so far this season.

Harry Cochrane

Having come through Rangers’ esteemed academy, Cochrane has achieved quite a lot despite being so young. While it is commendable that he is already a first-team regular for the Scottish club at the tender age of 16, one must bear in mind that signing him will not guarantee immediate results or anything remotely close to that.

Much like a few other young stars signed by Leeds, Cochrane will be a work-in-progress and he won’t be able to boost the club’s chances of securing the much-elusive promotion to the top-flight next season.

One might argue that the chance to move to Leeds will come across as a major deal for the young star. But we are talking about a player who is already clocking regular minutes on the field for Hearts’ first-team and it makes no sense for him to forego that and start all over at Leeds.

Also, it could take time for him to settle into life at Elland Road and all that could prove to be detrimental to his progress. Hence, for now, the best move for Leeds and Cochrane is to stay away from each other.
