Why Leicester City Will Regret Not Bringing In A Replacement For Danny Drinkwater

Former Leicester City player Danny Drinkwater sealed a deadline day move to Chelsea for £35million. The Blues were chasing Drinkwater for the whole of the summer transfer window and finally got their man, along with a £23million move for Torino right-back Davide Zappacosta. Therefore, Chelsea have done a decent amount of business in the summer transfer window.

Having lost Serbian Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United, Chelsea were in need of a replacement despite having already brought in Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco. Drinkwater is a box to box midfielder that could fit in well alongside the likes of N’Golo Kante, Fabregas and Bakayoko. But is it a good deal for Leicester City?

It was too late to bring in a replacement for the Stamford Bridge bound Englishman though. But having spent big on the likes of Harry Maguire and Kelechi Iheanacho, they needed to make some money in order to balance the books. Leicester could’ve done better business by accepting a deal beforehand which would’ve given them sufficient time to bring in a replacement for Drinkwater.

Leicester are currently waiting for an international clearance on a £22million move for Adrien Silva, which they did strike before 23:00 BST transfer deadline. But as I mentioned earlier, the deal would have probably been closed had they had enough time.

But what’s to happen has already happened and they find themselves a player short in midfield. Having started his career with Manchester United, the midfielder couldn’t nail down a place in the team and was hence loaned away to many a club as his career took an upward trajectory after winning the title in that “miracle-season’’ Leicester had, in the 2015/16 season.

Liverpool couldn't stop this golazo from Drinkwater.

If they miss out on Adrien Silva, Leicester City can upgrade their midfield options in January, when they can spend some of the Drinkwater money on replacements. Drinkwater himself must have never seen the move happening so late in the transfer window, but it’s one that has already been completed now as he will add significant depth to the Chelsea squad.

Assuming that Adrien Silva doesn’t arrive, they would find themselves a man short in midfield and will have to go that way until January at least, when they can look to bring in a replacement for the now departed Drinkwater.

Andre Silva would be a good signing as he is severely experienced, having played many games for Sporting CP as well as his national side, Portugal. If they do fail to land the Portuguese midfielder, Leicester will rue missing out on a replacement for Drinkwater as they will have to strive to finish in the top 10 at least, which would be a respectable season for the Foxes.
