Liverpool have made the best move of the season by agreeing on a new deal with this 28-year-old

Why Liverpool have done well by tying Virgil van Dijk to a new contract

Liverpool didn’t make major moves in the summer window but still did some great business by extending the deals of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

This has been a plan for the Reds as they have gotten most of their first-teamers to sign new contracts and have protected their stars well after their Champions League win three months ago.

Another player seems set to sign a new deal with the Reds as the Mirror claims that Virgil van Dijk is set to earn £200,000-a-week while he currently makes £125,000-a-week.

The Dutch defender is one of the best in the world and this move from the Reds could be the best deal of their season.

A colossus that improves the entire side

Van Dijk has transformed Liverpool’s defence since joining from Southampton, and the 28-year-old led them to the Champions League title last season.

The Dutch defender also won several individual accolades and could be in line for further glory in the coming weeks when the Ballon d’Or is awarded.

The 28-year-old is the Dutch captain and has made Liverpool’s defence one of the best in the world. Gone are the days when the Reds would see crazy mistakes from the likes of Kolo Toure or Mamadou Sakho.

Of course, credit must be given to their attack too but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their first piece of silverware under Jurgen Klopp came after Van Dijk formed a great partnership at the back and the Reds landed Alisson.

Salah, Firmino and Mane might get the plaudits for scoring the goals but Van Dijk has been the actual key into Liverpool’s growth in recent years.

The new deal keeping him till 2025 (h/t Mirror) ensures that the Reds see the best of the Dutchman and he seems to be improving with each season under his belt.

Liverpool’s defence just looks calmer and more in control when Van Dijk is present, irrespective of who his partner is.

Verdict

Van Dijk has several quality years left in the tank and Liverpool keeping him tied down till 2025 provides them with some protection at least.

Nothing can be taken for granted in football, but should Van Dijk see out his contract at the club, the Dutchman could end his career as a Reds legend.
