Liverpool have sent out a strong message by tying down this prodigious 18-year-old to a new contract

Why Liverpool have sent out a strong message with a new deal for Jake Cain

As confirmed by Liverpool’s official website, Liverpool have secured the long-term future of academy starlet Jake Cain by tying him down to his first professional deal at Anfield.

Cain, who is currently a member of Barry Lewtas’ U-18 side, is widely regarded as one of the brightest emerging prospects in Liverpool’s youth ranks and the Reds have moved quickly to tie him down to professional terms.

The news of Jake Cain’s fresh contract comes just a few days after fellow academy teenager Paul Glatzel committed his long-term future by putting pen to paper on a new deal at Melwood.

Born in Wigan, Jake Cain has been a part of Liverpool’s youth system since the age of nine and the highly-rated attacking midfielder made his debut for the U-18 side as a U-16 player during the 2017-18 season under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard.

The 18-year-old scored 2 goals and created a further 8 in 16 appearances for the U-18s in the U-18 Premier League last season, whilst also featuring in the club’s triumphant FA Youth Cup squad, as well as for the U-19 side, in the UEFA Youth League.

Cain has already hit the ground running in the U-18 Premier League this term, registering 3 goals and 4 assists in just 5 appearances to guide Liverpool U-18s to second place in the standings.

The teenager has been touted for a bright future in the beautiful game and his performances at the youth level have already earned him rave reviews.

A versatile attacking midfielder noted for his creative influence in a No.10 role, as well as his eye for goal, Cain apparently has the talent and the potential to go on and ply his trade at the highest level in the years to come.

The teenager has already shown a level of maturity that belies his tender years and Liverpool’s decision to offer him a professional deal is a clear indication that the Reds have him as a part of their plans for the future.

After losing Bobby Duncan to Fiorentina earlier in the summer, the Reds have seemingly acted quickly ever since to secure the futures of a few of their academy starlets and Jake Cain comes as the latest addition to that list.

Still very much in his formative years as a footballer, Cain is a work in progress and there is a still some way to go before he becomes ready to make the transition from the academy ranks to the senior team at Anfield.

Ideally, he would need to progress to the U-23 development side this season or in the upcoming campaign to stake a claim for a senior breakthrough. For the time being, though, Cain needs to work hard, keep his feet on the ground and focus on his development.

Interestingly, given the shortage of naturally-gifted creative midfielders in Jurgen Klopp’s side, Cain might find a clearer pathway to the first-team in the near future if he continues to impress the youth staff with his development.
