Liverpool’s defence would gain some much-needed strength if they land this powerful Frenchman – opinion

Liverpool opinion: Reds should make a move for Jérôme Roussillon

Smart spending and Mohamed Salah’s stunning rise has seen Liverpool become title challengers. Manchester City are the favourites by a long margin, but this season so far, the Reds have put up one big fight.

While they have struggled of late, picking up a few draws, that isn’t to say that Jurgen Klopp and his men aren’t in the fight.

Yet, their team is far from perfect. Their midfield is packed to the rafters, but Liverpool’s front-line depends too much on Roberto Firmino. While the Brazilian has done well since moving from Hoffenheim, he’s struggled to make an impact this season, with just 11 goals to his name.

Klopp’s alternative would be to use either Divock Origi or Daniel Sturridge, neither of whom has impressed this season. Furthermore, they have no back-up at right-back or left-back, with Alberto Moreno’s contract expiring. That would leave Liverpool with only Andrew Robertson.

And while the Scottish international is a phenomenal player, he cannot play every game of the season. That being said, there are a lot of players out there who can come in and replace Moreno, but one man Liverpool must target is Jérôme Roussillon.

Currently at Wolfsburg, the 26-year-old is of the same age as Moreno and has had quite a career as one of the most underrated left-backs in the world.

Powerful, very physical, agile and intelligent, the Frenchman has the ability at his disposal to upend both Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Mendy as France’s first choice. Why that hasn’t happened is a question that only few people can answer, but he would be perfect for Liverpool.

Few players come as talented and athletically gifted as Roussillon is, but consistency has always been the 26-year-old’s issue. Now in the prime of his footballing years, he failed to knock down a first-team spot until finally making it in his final season at Montpellier.

It was here that Jérôme Roussillon really honed his skills, which earned him a move to the Bundesliga.

Conclusion

While Alberto Moreno is a splendid attacker, the Spaniard isn’t the best defender in the world, which is why he has been relegated to the bench. On the other hand, Jérôme Roussillon combines the best of both worlds, which make him the perfect man to replace Moreno.

Furthermore, the 26-year-old’s blend of power and athleticism will see him fight Andrew Robertson for the first-team berth at the club and that’s something Liverpool need. Competition for a first-team spot is important so that players do not become complacent. Complacency destroys a title challenger.
