Why Liverpool should sign this world-class star this summer and not worry about the £79m price tag

Liverpool have been reportedly keeping tabs on AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker for quite some time.

Roma will be desperate to keep hold of Alisson, who has established himself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in Europe. The Italian club want £79m for the Brazilian, which would be a record fee for a goalkeeper.

The Reds are desperate to bolster their goalkeeping ranks during the summer transfer window, with neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius impressing on a regular basis whenever they played last season. And Jurgen Klopp’s search for a custodian might have only intensified, following Karius’ disastrous performance in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

But should Liverpool break the transfer record for a goalkeeper after making Virgil van Dijk the most expensive defender of all time in January?

Alisson has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football since joining Roma from Internacional in 2016. His transformation from a raw, untamed talent into one of the most sought-after goalkeepers has been sensational.

The Brazilian kept 17 clean sheets for Roma in the Serie A last season, a pretty impressive record. He is strong, commanding and blessed with lightning-fast reflexes – three skills that are missing in Liverpool’s current set of goalkeepers. Mignolet has been out of favour since becoming second-fiddle to Karius, who after a slow but steady start, came up with a horrendous performance in Kiev as his two blunders cost Liverpool dearly in the Champions League final 3-1 loss against Real Madrid.

Alisson, who possesses outstanding reflexes and shot-stopping abilities, is often unbeatable in one-on-one situations. He is excellent with the ball at his feet and can pick out a pass much better than Mignolet or Karius. His distribution skills, coupled with a top reading of the game makes Alisson extra-special.

Also, he is very quick and agile and boasts a commanding presence inside the box. Alisson loves to come off his line to deal with crosses – of course, it is risky as it took the 25-year-old out of the equation several times when he was not able to get to the ball first. However, Alisson is a courageous goalkeeper, who trusts his instincts.

Alisson is arguably in the best form of his life, highly impressing at Roma this past season. At 25, he is still relatively young as a goalkeeper. He heads into the World Cup in Russia as Brazil’s first choice between the sticks, edging out Premier League champions Manchester City’s Ederson Moraes.

Based on what we have seen last season, Karius and Mignolet are not good enough to don the Liverpool jersey. So, moving for a player in the mould of Alisson looks to be the right move for the Merseyside giants. If Klopp desires to win trophies next season, he needs to get a world-class custodian such as Alisson.

Without further delay, Liverpool must break the bank for Alisson in the summer. The addition of the Brazilian could make all the difference for the Reds next term.
