Last piece of the puzzle? Liverpool signing this German veteran in January could get them the PL title this season

Why Liverpool should sign Thomas Muller in the January window

Liverpool were interested in signing Thomas Muller back in 2017, according to Bild (h/t Liverpool Echo). Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign the German for the Reds, and Bild adds that Muller wants to leave Bayern Munich in January (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The 30-year-old has fallen behind ex-Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho in the pecking order. Niko Kovac has made some tough decisions since taking over at the Bavarian club, and Muller seems to be on the receiving end of that.

While Bayern try to land another Bundesliga title, the Reds are trying to do likewise in the Premier League. They lead the Premier League after eight games but know that Manchester City can claw back the eight-point deficit with 30 games to go.

Thomas Muller

The Reds didn’t spend much in the summer but landing Muller in the winter window could set them for their first Premier League crown.

One of the best footballing brains in the world

Muller doesn’t have the pace of Sadio Mane and neither does he have the trickery of someone like Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo. What he does possess is an excellent footballing brain, which somehow allows him to be in the right place at the right time.

It is tough to teach spatial awareness to players but Muller seems to have mastered this. The 30-year-old has been a regular scorer for Bayern and Germany with over 200 goals in his career.

Liverpool also have some smart footballers in the side, with Roberto Firmino doing a lot of great work.

The Brazilian doesn’t score regularly but creates space and chances for Mohamed Salah and Mane. The 28-year-old is the brain behind our attack and Liverpool do not have anyone else who can do a similar job.

Muller might not be of the same age as Firmino but he could do a similar job for the Reds. The 30-year-old’s movement is brilliant and his vision to find the right man is an added bonus.

The German can also play in several positions across the attack and the midfield and could cover several players for Klopp.

Of course, Muller would be rotated by Klopp as the Reds have many quality options, and it will be interesting to see if the Bayern star is willing to accept that.

Verdict

Liverpool came close to landing the title last season but some poor draws in the second half of the campaign cost them. The ability to rest and rotate the attack would help Klopp greatly this campaign, and a January move for Muller should be considered.

The German would provide the intelligence to break tough opponents and could be the difference between Liverpool being champions and runners-up.
