Why Manchester City should hijack Chelsea’s move for Sandro Tonali
According to the Sun, Chelsea are set to make a £20m offer for Sandro Tonali, beating Juventus and AS Roma to sign the Serie B teen prodigy. The 18-year-old midfielder has impressed one and all with his performances for Italian second-tier club Brescia. Maurizio Sarri is chasing the youngster for a transfer.
As per the reports, Chelsea boss sent scouts to watch the player as he played a starring role in Brescia’s 4-1 win over Padova during the week. Tonali has been a shining star in the Serie B and top Serie A clubs are interested in him. Sarri wanted the 18-year-old last season at Napoli.
However, Premier League champions Manchester City should hijack this move and develop an interest in the midfielder. Here’s why:
Player Analysis – Sandro Tonali
The Italian is a versatile player in the midfield. His favoured position is the defensive midfield, shielding the back-line and being good on the ball. His turn of pace to go past people in tight areas is something special, which also helps him to be secure in possession.
Manchester City have an abundance of talent when it comes to attacking depth and defensive cover. However, there is one position in which they are a bit short – defensive midfield. Fernandinho is the only recognised first-team defensive midfielder in the squad but he is doing a fantastic job for the team.
The only worry for Pep Guardiola would be the Brazilian’s age. He is 33 and is nearing the end of his illustrious career. Hence, the manager must look at options elsewhere and cover that position sooner than later.
Sandro Tonali is an impressive young talent who is taking Italian football by surprise. He is touted to be a great player in the future and he has utmost control of what he is doing on the football pitch. Therefore, Pep should go for the youngster before Chelsea make the decisive move.
