Why Manchester United Should Go Back And Sign Their Former Midfield Target

William Carvalho

After three dismal seasons at Manchester United, fans expectations are huge from the new incoming boss Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese will be expected to bring instance success at Old Trafford similar to his tenure at Chelsea, where he won the League cup and Premier League double in the 2014-2015 season, something if replicated at United could cement his place amongst the greats who have represented the club over the years. The manager has been given a blank cheque by the United hierarchy, who have told him to get the necessary players required to get United back competing against the best in Europe.

With no Champions League football, Mourinho can concentrate fully on the domestic campaign, however absence from Europe could make it difficult to lure players to Old Trafford. It hasn’t taken long for Mourinho to sign his first player, with Eric Bailly moving to United early in the transfer window. But still there are a lot of gaps that need to be filled before United begin their campaign in the Community Shield. Fans have been urging the former Chelsea manager to sign new world class players who can make United the side that was feared by most teams across Europe. One player for whom fans have voiced their support is the Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, who recently participated in Portugal’s 0-0 draw against Austria in the European Championship.

The 24 year old powerful defensive midfielder has been starring with Sporting Lisbon in his native Portugal. After some really impressive performances in recent times, the midfielder has been a target for many clubs, who are vying for his services. Especially a move to England has been on the cards for a long time, with Arsenal previously keen on bringing him to the Emirates, however it is United who jumped the queue and are the front runners right now for his signing.

While Ronaldo was disappointing in last week’s draw against Austria, it was Carvalho who again showed his quality with a superb display in front of the back four, nullifying Austrian attacks and keeping the ball well in midfield. Standing at 6’2″, the midfielder has excellent positioning sense, speed and composure as his greatest strengths on the field. The 24-year-old takes up good positions in the midfield, from where he uses his good sense of perception to intercept any balls being played through him.

Mourinho can make Carvalho into a Matic type player for United, who if given the right advice and training can become one of the worlds best for years to come. The midfielder’s Portuguese nationality and ability to learn quickly can make him an asset for Mourinho. Although United might have to fork out a big amount to get him to Manchester, they shouldn’t hesitate in spending big on this exceptionally talented player especially after the surprise signing Antony Martial turning out to be a rather successful one.
