Man United reigniting interest in €80m-rated Serie A wall would instantly turn them into title challengers – opinion

Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils go for Alessio Romagnoli?

Italian news outlet Football Italia has reported that AC Milan are ready to sell captain Alessio Romagnoli next summer. The Italian giants have to follow FFP rules and if they do not qualify for next season’s Champions League, this will lead to Milan selling a few stars.

One of those players is Romagnoli, with his fee being somewhere around €70-80million. While that does seem a lot, many seem to forget that Romagnoli is considered to be in the same bracket as John Stones, Milan Skrinar and Kostas Manolas.

The 24-year-old is easily one of the world’s most consistent and reliable centre-backs, which makes it no surprise that he’s highly wanted. The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked in the past (Daily Mail), but it’s the Red Devils who should make the move.

This season hasn’t seen the best of Manchester United, with the Red Devils having a nightmare season. They’ve already sacked one manager in Jose Mourinho and appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a replacement.

The former Manchester United striker has done a decent job at the helm so far, but has seen his side struggle a lot defensively. The likes of Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and even Matteo Darmian are all defensive liabilities and that has shown over the last few months.

They need a leader in their back-line and if nothing else, Alessio Romagnoli is exactly that. Despite being just 24 years old, he’s made just shy of 150 appearances for the Rossoneri after arriving in the summer of 2015 from AS Roma.

It shows the reliability and solidity that the Italian can produce on a regular basis. Furthermore, Romagnoli is reliable with the ball at his feet and personifies the modern centre-back.

That combined with his 6’2″ frame and agility that tends to shock defenders, makes him the perfect centre-half for Manchester United.

Moreover, he is much more reliable than Kostas Manolas on his worst days. The Red Devils need leaders in their side and more than anything, Alessio Romagnoli will give them that.

However, he cannot be their only addition, as they need new additions on board, with an emphasis on their midfield and back-line.

Conclusion

If a player like Alessio Romagnoli is available, this is a must-make move for Manchester United, especially this summer. Clearly, they need new players and someone like the Italian would be a wonderful addition to any team in the Premier League, let alone Manchester United.
