Here’s why it would be in Man United’s best interests to revive interest in this 21-year-old defensive asset

Why Manchester United should rekindle interest in Nikola Milenkovic

Manchester United have had a frustrating start to their season. Although they did enough to win their games so far this season, they ended up failing to get over the line.

They should have kept more clean sheets. Despite solid defensive showings and reducing the opposition to a limited number of chances in the Premier League, they’ve been punished for the slightest errors in the defence.

One player who could consider himself unlucky in this regard is Victor Lindelof, who was United’s best defender last season but with the inclusion of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he’s stood out like a sore thumb.

Lindelof is a fine defender but he’s weak in the air and teams have been very clinical around him. One player they were linked with over the summer, who doesn’t have such a weakness and would make the United defence nearly impenetrable, is Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic.

Milenkovic is a Serbian international, who stands at 6 ft 5 inches and is perfectly suited to the physicality of the Premier League. He’s only 21 and has bags of experience already. His pace would be another important asset as United play a higher line due to their dominance in possession.

He’s extremely combative and in Maguire, he has the perfect partner to bring some calmness to the backline. United have a history of great defensive partnerships and are finally looking like a side that’s gotten better defensively.

United have binned a lot of players in the summer window and are likely to do so next summer as well, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clearly being quite ruthless about how he wants his side to look for now and in the future.

The Red Devils have too many centre-backs who haven’t made the grade. By getting rid of more, they must aim to sign a player like Milenkovic.
