Man United signing this established Tottenham star would be nothing but a transfer blunder – agreed?

Manchester United opinion: Solskjaer shouldn’t sign Eric Dier – agreed?

According to the Sun, Eric Dier has been linked with a move to Manchester United. The Spurs midfielder made a great start under Mauricio Pochettino. He was used in the holding midfield position and became one of the most promising young players in the league along with his teammate Dele Alli.

In the last 2 years though, his performances haven’t been as effective. He’s often had to play at centre-back and he’s done the job admirably but he hasn’t made the centre-back position or the holding modified position his own.

Dier is still fairly young and is a player that any side would like to have due to his versatility. So Spurs should have no urgent reason to get rid of him. Manchester United are looking to rebuild their team from scratch.

The Guardian suggests that new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for young British talent who will enhance the squad for years to come instead of looking for marquee signings that have failed the club in recent seasons like Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez.

This is perhaps the right approach but Eric Dier isn’t worth the gamble. There is a player eerily similar to Eric Dier in Scott McTominay, who has made it to the first-team.

McTominay is more mobile and tenacious. The young Scottish international has also added goals to his game and any move for Dier will tamper with his development.

Nemanja Matic and Fred are also capable of holding onto that position for certain games despite not being at their very best last season. United need to look at a more mobile midfield player because the midfielders they have right now aren’t the most mobile.

They also have an up and coming prospect in James Garner, who could very easily find himself in the first-team in two years time and if Solskjaer is serious about the rebuilding job, these are the sort of risks he has to take. He has to trust the academy graduates like Sir Alex did for decades.

Conclusion

Eric Dier didn’t have the best of seasons but he is still a big part of Spurs’ future, and should continue his development under a coach like Pochettino. It would be in everyone’s best interest if Eric Dier continues his career at Tottenham and United let this deal slide.
