Man United signing this prolific £13m veteran would be the perfect answer to goalscoring woes

Why Manchester United signing Edin Dzeko would be a smart move

ESPN (h/t Metro) suggest that Manchester United are considering a move for Roma striker Edin Dzeko in January amid concerns over Mario Mandzukic’s inactivity. He is contracted to Roma until 2022 and is valued at around £13million.

Manchester United were heavily linked with Juventus’ Mandzukic but they seem to have opted against signing him as he lacked involvement with the Serie A giants (h/t Metro). His frozen situation under Maurizio Sarri has made United reconsider their options thus making Edin Dzeko as their top priority.

Dzeko has proven to be a goalscoring machine during his time in England and Italy. He was with United’s cross-town rivals Manchester City for four years between 2011 and 2016 and racked up 72 goals in 189 appearances for the Cityzens.

Since his move to Italy, Dzeko developed into a lethal and deadly striker, and has nearly 100 goals for AS Roma. His 29 goals in the 2016/17 Serie A season saw him top the goal scoring charts in the league.

Meanwhile, at United, Solskjaer has limited options up front after the departure of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez. Marcus Rashford has led the line this season and Mason Greenwood has been shuffled between the first-team and the reserve team.

The Red Devils clearly lack an experienced player to help them and this is why Solskjaer must try to sign Edin Dzeko.

Though the Norwegian has intended to bring a change in the team by deploying youngsters, Dzeko’s presence and involvement could give Solskjaer various options to choose from in demanding situations. With his proven track record, he could surely be successful at Old Trafford.

Rashford and Daniel James have played continuously and fatigue is a factor that can cause troubles as the season gets tougher in the later stages.

In 12 league games this term, Dzeko has scored 5 times and assisted once. He has also registered 2.8 shots, 1 key pass and 1.4 dribbles per game. In the meantime, he has also has enjoyed a pass success rate of 70.4%, according to whoscored.

Manchester United, who once dominated the Premier League, have fallen out of track in recent years and do not seem to be any more threatening. If Solskjaer can build a dominant team, Dzeko’s return to England must be their priority in the mid-season transfer window.

Verdict

Though he is at the twilight of his career, Dzeko doesn’t seem to slow down. Solskjaer and Manchester United can benefit from his game.

Dzeko would be the perfect short-term solution for United if they are aiming to finish high up the table. Manchester United must make sure they get a hold on him in January if they are seeking a complete striker who has a lot more to offer.
