Why Anthony Martial Must Stick With Manchester United Amidst Interest From Juventus
Anthony Martial has enjoyed a gradual rise at Old Trafford and right now, he is deservedly viewed as one of the brightest prospects at Manchester United. Despite being just 22 years old, the Frenchman has already endured several ups and downs.
Having joined in 2015, Martial arrived at the Red Devils’ camp at a time when the club was going through a lot of turmoil after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. However, Martial grit his teeth and fought on. His hard work appears to have paid off.
Prior to Alexis Sanchez’s high-profile arrival from Arsenal this January, Martial was a regular on the left-wing. He faced competition from another budding youngster, Marcus Rashford, but the duo worked incredibly well which helped manager Jose Mourinho to switch effectively between them.
However, with Sanchez in the mix, Martial has seen a significant reduction in his game time. As per a report by ESPN, Juventus are eyeing a summer move for the talented winger, who currently earns £65,000-a-week at Manchester United.
On paper, it might seem like a good idea for Martial to leave United in search of regular game time. He is young, incredibly talented and is quite versatile as well. In fact, he has all the makings of a future superstar.
Given his immense talent and potential, it would make sense for United to hold on to him and convince him to stay. His current contract with United runs until 2019 but as per a report from The Sun, talks of an extension have come to a standstill.
When United were going through tough times, players like Martial and Rashford were the ones who helped lift the club back. It is important for Mourinho to recognise the Frenchman’s loyalty and commitment to the club and utilise him more often.
The simple fact is that Sanchez’s inclusion has not remarkably improved United’s performances. Also, whether or not he will continue with United on a long-term basis remains to be seen. In the event of injuries and unforeseen circumstances, it won’t be enough for Mourinho to continue with just Rashford as his option on the left-wing.
Thus, Martial must remain patient and extend his contract for at least another year. United will never stop needing players like him and if he holds on for a bit longer and continues to work hard, the French winger might just go on to become an indispensable member of the squad.
