Why Mauricio Pochettino Should Close His Eyes And Complete This Swap Deal

According to reports from Italian news outlet Corriere dello Sport, Inter Milan are ready to allow midfielder Marcelo Brozovic join Tottenham Hotspur, if Spurs winger Erik Lamela goes the other way.

The North Londoners are reportedly looking to add more steel to their midfield and had made Brozovic their primary target for the summer transfer window. And now the Nerazzurri are considering a swap deal involving Lamela, who last kicked a ball for Tottenham back in October last year in the 2-1 EFL Cup loss against Liverpool and has been ruled out with an injury ever since.

The 25-year old Argentine international has caused speculations of a move away from White Hart Lane since quite some time now, more so when he was spotted in Rome, where he played most of his football with AS Roma. Despite Spurs stating that he has been back in training for quite some time now, the lack of football has caused some concerns among a few sections of the supporters.

At his best, Lamela is the perfect player for Tottenham for the way they play. He is someone who has the ability to run at defenders at serious speed and can beat his man and cut inside or stretch the defence wide. That has been something that Spurs have been lacking since he has been out injured.

However, despite being with Tottenham for quite some time now, he hasn’t been able to find his best form. Having struggled to hit the peak and with a good part of six months spent on the sidelines, there are chances that the North Londoners could look to ship him out. Before he got injured, he had played fourteen games in the Premier League, scoring twice and assisting seven more strikes.

Brozovic, on the other hand, has been growing in stature at Inter with each passing year and has earned his reputation as one of the most promising defensive midfielders in the game currently. Being chased by rivals Manchester United as well, the Croatian could provide quality options in the middle of the park for Mauricio Pochettino along with the likes of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama.

The 24-year old has played 22 games for Inter this season and has managed to find the back of the net five times, along with setting up four goals for his teammates. A quality player, who can play anywhere in the central midfield, be it in an attacking role or in a withdrawn role, Brozovic will bring in some serious versatility and quality to the midfield. And with Tottenham looking good for another season in the Champions League, they could do with someone of his class and stature in their playing XI without a question.

Only concern for Tottenham in signing Brozovic would be that it could see the game time that is being afforded to the young Harry Winks cut short. However, with the number of games that they will be playing, that is something that Spurs should not be taking into consideration.

On one hand, there is Lamela, who, at his best can be devastating, but he has struggled to take off in London and post this lengthy injury layoff, it will be even more difficult for him to get going. On the other hand, there is Brozovic who is playing some of his finest football in Italy and can make a great impact if he comes in. Considering all the factors in play, it would seem prudent that Spurs give the go-ahead to a swap deal.
