Middlesbrough shouldn’t think twice about making an attempt to land this experienced Leicester star in the summer – opinion

Middlesbrough opinion: Boro should reignite interest in Eldin Jakupovic

Middlesbrough were heavily linked with a move for Leicester City star Eldin Jakupovic in the summer as they looked to add reinforcements (Gazette Live). However, no move ever materialised for the 34-year-old and both parties went their way.

However, while Darren Randolph has done well this season, even making the team of the season, the club still needs a new shot-stopper. Their back-ups are Andy Lonergan and Dimitrios Konstantopoulos. Both are past the age of 35 and more importantly, both have struggled this season.

That has left manager Tony Pulis with just Randolph but the 31-year-old has been brilliant with 16 clean sheets to his name. That’s the Championship’s highest and he’s on course to win the Golden Glove.

A large portion of that has been down to manager Tony Pulis setting his team up defensively with the emphasises on keeping clean sheets.

That has worked for Boro and they have the best defensive record in the English second tier, which has helped them to a play-off spot. But of late, results have been against them and thus as a result, Middlesbrough have fallen off the pace.

They sit in 8th place and are 4 points behind 6th-placed Bristol, who have a played a game lesser. All this showcases just why the club needs another goalkeeper, and Eldin Jakupovic is their man.

The Leicester City shot-stopper has struggled to oust Kasper Schmeichel from his first-team spot and has thus struggled to get game time. This season, the 34-year-old has managed just one appearance to his name, in the EFL cup.

Furthermore, he’s been dropped from the first-team altogether by both former manager Claude Puel and current boss Brendan Rodgers. It’s time to move on and has shown that he can flourish in the lower leagues, playing for both Hull City and Leyton Orient.

The Swiss star is experienced and has over 250 appearances in his career so far, which is just what Middlesbrough need next season.

Conclusion

Middlesbrough need a new goalkeeper and though Eldin Jakupovic isn’t the most glamorous name, the Leicester City man is a reliable option.

He can not only play as a back-up to Darren Randolph but would also give the 31-year-old some much-needed competition for the first-team slot.
