Why Nemanja Maksimovic would be an excellent signing for West Ham
According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are interested in signing Getafe midfielder Nemanja Maksimovic this month.
Nemanja Maksimovic, 24, made his name with Domzale in Slovenia and Astana in Kazakhstan that earned him a move to Valencia in 2017. But he struggled to get into Valencia’s XI and managed only 15 appearances in his debut season.
Having failed to live up to the expectations at the Mestalla Stadium, the Serbian international joined Getafe in the summer of 2018. He enjoyed a fantastic debut season with Getafe as the defensive midfielder played 36 times in the league.
And Maksimovic has hit the ground running in the 2019/20 campaign, with his performances catching the attention of West Ham.
The Hammers squad has been brutally exposed this season with deficiencies in several key areas eventually costing Manuel Pellegrini his job. David Moyes, who returned to the club as Pellegrini’s replacement, couldn’t have asked for a better start as his West Ham side thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 on the New Year’s Day.
However, Moyes has a lot of work to do on this side and the midfield has been a particular problem for some time. Declan Rice may not have enjoyed the best of seasons but he has been a regular since the start of the season. What Rice has lacked is a reliable partner alongside him in central midfield.
Mark Noble always puts in tireless displays whenever he’s on the pitch but the West Ham skipper has shown signs of ageing. Jack Wilshere has missed more than half of the games and Carlos Sanchez is just not good enough to compete in the Premier League.
In that regard, Nemanja Maksimovic could be the solution to their midfield issues.
The Serbian is a defensive midfielder by trade, known for his capacity to control games and break the opposition’s play with his tackling and interceptions skills. Not only does he work hard as a shield in front of the back four, but he is also strong enough on the ball to initiate attacks.
An energetic and powerful midfielder, Maksimovic also likes to drive forward with the ball and is a threat from indirect set-pieces.
Verdict
All in all, Maksimovic is exactly what West Ham have been missing and the Serbian international would be perfect to complement Rice and Noble in the middle of the park for West Ham. In the video below, one can see the 24-year-old’s ability to break attacks as well as contribute going forward.
