Newcastle beating Leicester to sign this 8-goal Ligue 1 star would immensely help them later in the season

Why Newcastle should go all out to sign Habibou Diallo in January

According to Express, Newcastle United and Leicester City are keeping tabs on FC Metz striker Habibou Diallo ahead of a potential January swoop.

Habibou Diallo, 24, who has come through the ranks at FC Metz, has eight goals so far this season in Ligue 1. The Senegalese marksman has continued from where he left off last season, where he hit 26 goals in the 2018/19 season to help Metz win promotion from Ligue 2.

Despite the 24-year-old’s exploits, FC Metz lie 19th in the Ligue 1 table, having won just once in their last five games. The report adds the Ligue 1 club wants £7m for Diallo, a figure which shouldn’t prove to be a problem for Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers.

Nevertheless, Newcastle United must do everything in their powers to beat Leicester to Diallo’s signature in January.

The Magpies splashed the cash to bring in the likes of Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin in the summer to cover for the departure of Ayoze Perez, Salomon Rondon and Joselu, whilst Andy Carroll also returned to his boyhood club following his release from West Ham.

However, Joelinton and Saint-Maximin are yet to fire all cylinders, while Miguel Almiron is yet to break his duck for the Tyneside-based club since arriving from Atlanta United in January. Having scored just nine goals so far, it is very clear that the Magpies are lacking any sort of creativity and firepower in their attack.

Even though a win over West Ham at the weekend would have given Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce some relief, he knows his team are a long way to go to secure a top-half finish. And bringing in a new striker in January could go a long way towards helping them achieve their season’s aims and objectives.

Keeping that in mind, Newcastle must make a move for Habibou Diallo, who can make a few dangerous runs behind the opposition backline.

The one-cap Senegal international scored 26 goals last season, playing a crucial role in helping Metz achieve Ligue 1 promotion. And the forward’s flying start to Ligue 1 campaign with 8 goals in 12 games for a struggling Metz side is a clear testament to his obvious pedigree in front of goal.

Below is the video that just proves how dangerous Diallo is in the box and from set-pieces.

Verdict

Signing Diallo will certainly improve the quality of Newcastle’s squad, offering more punch and goals to their attack as the Tyneside-based outfit look to get out of the relegation scrap during the second half of the campaign.
