Why Newcastle United must sign this £70,000-a-week Manchester United star in the summer

Why Newcastle United must sign Luke Shaw this summer

As per a report from Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are interested in a summer transfer for Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw. The player has not endured the best of times at Old Trafford even though he arrived at the club amidst a lot of expectations from Southampton.

His contract with the Red Devils is set to expire this summer and there seem to be no talks of a new contract. Hence, in such a situation, it only makes sense for Newcastle to exploit the situation and lure Shaw.

Shaw is a sublime talent and the commitment with which he continued soldiering on to get back into the first-team is truly commendable. Due to a terrible injury, the player had to miss out on a good majority of the season but he started playing for the U23s and then got back into Jose Mourinho’s starting XI as well.

However, everything is not smooth for Shaw at United and the Portuguese gaffer has never shied away from expressing his frustrations about the £70,000-a-week player in public.

This would irk a lot of footballers and Shaw is no different. Hence, with the season coming to a close, it does raise a lot of questions about his future. First and foremost, there is absolutely no doubt about the player’s potential and talent.

He was one of Southampton’s brightest prospects and he continues to be an excellent left-back until today. However, things have simply not worked out for him at United and to salvage his career, it would make sense for him to join Newcastle.

The Magpies have been in and out of relegation scares this season but they look solid enough to survive this season. However, for the next term, a player like Shaw could prove to be resourceful, especially if they manage to sign Kenedy permanently. The same report from Chronicle Live has claimed that Newcastle are keen on signing Kenedy permanently and if they do that, Benitez will have a lethal combination in the form of Shaw and Kenedy.

Both players can dominate the left-flank and fuel the attack to create some goalscoring chances. Shaw and Kenedy are quite young and speedy enough to establish themselves as an impregnable force down the left-hand side and that is something that can truly revamp Newcastle’s performances.

Paul Dummett has been resourceful at left-back but it would help to have another option at hand, thus providing all the more reason for the club to prioritise a deal for Shaw.
