Newcastle must surely make a move for this 24-year-old Ligue 1 star if they are to improve next season

Newcastle opinion: Should Newcastle sign Lucas Ocampos?

While Rafael Benitez has done a rather incredible job with Newcastle United, the club still needs a lot of reinforcements. They somehow managed to finish in the top half of the table last season, but this season has seen them struggle to maintain that.

The Magpies were sitting in the relegation zone for most of this season before a massive winter arrival.

Spending big on Miguel Almiron has proved to be a brilliant move, with the former MLS star injecting a new-found hope and creativity into their side. This has proved to be a key move, with the 25-year-old playing a major role in Newcastle United getting pushed up the table.

However, that still doesn’t mean that the club does not need any reinforcements, and given the state of their team, summer business will do them good. At the very least, a new midfielder, left-back and a striker should be at the top of their shortlist, along with a winger.

Christian Atsu and Kenedy have failed to make an impact, with the latter here only on loan.

Even if a permanent move is made, the Brazilian has failed to make an impact since moving to Tyneside and hasn’t started a game since December.

That being said, one man the club should make a move for is Ligue 1 star Lucas Ocampos. While the 24-year-old did struggle when he moved out of Ligue 1 on loan with AC Milan, he remains a quality star.

He finished last season with 16 goals and four assists in all competitions, really showing his rise into a reliable and consistent goal-scorer. That combined with Ocampos’ skill, talent and finishing prowess makes him perfect for Newcastle.

However, what makes him perfect for Rafael Benitez and his tactics is the fact that he can play anywhede across the front-line.

Used as a center-forward at times, the Frenchman has done relatively well when played more centrally, putting his strength and stamina to great use.

Not only that, his aggression and defensive work rate will appeal to Benitez, as that’s something the former Liverpool boss looks for.

Since Salomon Rondon is only on loan at the club, Lucas Ocampos can replace him and also if needed, replace Kenedy as a winger. While he will take time to adjust to a new league, his aggression and work rate will help make the transition easier.
