6 goals, 4 assists – Chelsea signing this terrific 26-year-old star would solve a key issue

Why Philipp Max would be a fantastic signing for Chelsea

Back in December 2017, the Daily Mail (h/t The Sun) had claimed Chelsea scouted Augsburg ace Philipp Max during the Bundesliga clash with Hertha Berlin.

Philipp Max, 26, joined Augsburg in 2015 from Karlsruhe, having kicked-off his senior career at Schalke. The left-back, who helped his nation win silver at the 2016 Olympic Games, was on the books of Bayern Munich as a youth product, from 2007-2010, before moving to Schalke.

The German has been a regular for Augsburg this season, having played in 15 Bundesliga games, scoring six goals and assisting four times in the process. With Max enjoying another solid season at Augsburg Arena, Chelsea must rekindle their interest in the defender this month.

Frank Lampard has done an excellent job in his first season at Chelsea, particularly when the club couldn’t buy players in the last window due to the transfer ban.

If Lampard can lead the Blues to another top-four spot in the Premier League, and perhaps even lift the FA Cup or enter the latter stages of the Champions League by beating Bayern Munich, it will be deemed as a successful season for the Londoners.

Now that Chelsea can sign players this window, Lampard must prioritise improving his defence, which has conceded 29 goals in 21 league games.

Back in October 2019, the Leicester Mercury had claimed that the left-back is one area where Lampard wants to make some changes moving forward, with neither Marcos Alonso nor Emerson Palmieri managing to convince the manager.

Thus, the Blues must go all out to sign Philipp Max, who has been a consistent performer since joining Augsburg back in 2015.

An attacking left-back, Max is adept at creating chances as well as scoring goals. He is blessed with sublime technical ability, energy, power and aggression. The 26-year-old boasts of great stamina, which allows him to bomb up and down the left flank adequately over the course of a 90-minute match.

The German is a strong left-back who is capable of driving forward with the ball and helping his team transit from the defensive third into the attacking third quickly.

An expert from set-pieces and dead-ball situations, the Augsburg ace’s ability to score and create goals in equal measure should make him a fantastic fit for Lampard’s Chelsea.

In the video below, one could get a glimpse of Max’s style of play and the qualities he could bring to Stamford Bridge if a move goes through.

Verdict

Given that Emerson has struggled with injuries and Alonso has blown a bit hot and cold since the start of the season, Lampard should bring in a new left-back this month and Max looks more than capable of thriving in the Premier League.
