QPR making a permanent move for this £5m Burnley star would boost promotion hopes

Why QPR should seal a permanent transfer for Nakhi Wells

According to TalkSport (h/t Lancashire Live), Nakhi Wells has opened the door for a permanent move to QPR, with his contract at Burnley set to expire at the end of the ongoing campaign.

The 29-year-old Bermuda international, who is currently on a second successive loan spell at the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium from Burnley, has expressed his desire to pledge his future to QPR, having established himself as a popular figure amongst the fans in West London. Wells has admitted his disappointment at his failure to make the grade in the Premier League with Burnley, but he still entertains hopes of making a name for himself in the top-flight with QPR, with the striker claiming that he is focussed on guiding the club to promotion. Having racked up 49 goals in 153 appearances for Huddersfield Town and helped the Terriers secure promotion to the top-flight, the Bermudan international earned a £5million move to Burnley in 2017 but he is still awaiting his first league start for the Clarets.

Wells wasn’t at his sparkling best for QPR last season, having accumulated 7 goals and 6 assists in 40 appearances in the Championship, but the Bermudan has really come to the fore this term and has been one of the cornerstones of the club’s fine start to the season under new manager Mark Warburton.

The 29-year-old has already bettered his goal tally from the previous campaign, bagging 8 goals and 2 assists in 14 league appearances till date, with his braces in victories over Luton Town and Millwall being some of the highlights of his season so far.

Currently placed 10th in the standings, just four points adrift of the playoff spots, QPR have emerged as one of the playoff dark horses, and Nakhi Wells has been at the centre of a lot of good things that the West London outfit have achieved under Warburton this term.

Wells has formed a deadly strike partnership with West Ham loanee Jordan Hugill, who has netted 7 times in the Championship so far, and the duo has shouldered the bulk of the club’s goalscoring workload, contributing with 15 out of the total tally of 24 goals.

To put things into perspective, it doesn’t require a rocket scientist to figure out that Nakhi Wells is one of the key cogs in QPR’s engine at the moment, and with his contract at Burnley set to expire next summer, QPR should start weighing up a permanent transfer for the 29-year-old.

Wells has settled down really well at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium over the last twelve months and while his first season at the club wasn’t overly impressive, his promising goal returns this early in the season should have gone a long way towards endearing him to the hearts of the fans.

The Bermudan has already churned out some scintillating performances for QPR this season and there are obvious signs that he could well be instrumental in the club’s unlikely surge for promotion later on in the campaign.

Verdict

To that end, QPR should go all out in their attempts to secure a permanent deal for the 29-year-old, with the player himself keen on a permanent switch to West London.

It is imperative to say that Wells, who boasts of a wealth of Football League experience, is a striker with proven pedigree in the Championship, and though not the most consistent goalscorer in the second-tier, he could still be a real coup.
