Rangers offering fresh terms to retain this powerful Scotland U19 prodigy is the need of the hour – Here’s why

Why Rangers offering new deal to Jamie Barjonas is good for both parties

According to a report by Daily Record, Rangers youngster Jamie Barjonas is set to sign a new deal with the club that will keep him at the Ibrox for another year.

The midfielder, who is a Rangers academy product and now a Scotland U19 international, will finish up his current contract at the end of this season. If and when he signs an extension, his stay at the club will run on for one more season.

Despite playing only nine games for the Rangers’ first-team so far and getting linked to loan moves away to small clubs, manager Steven Gerrard rates the player highly and wants him to stay put. (h/t Daily Record)

The Gers have made a great start to their season and Barjonas is one of the many examples that their academy system is working well and producing quality players.

Below, we analyse the youngster’s game and conclude as to why a contract extension is good for both parties:

Barjonas could hold the midfield together in the future

Jamie Barjonas is a prodigious young midfield player, who prefers to play the box-to-box role in central midfield but can also decently operate as a defensive midfielder or a wide midfielder in a flat-midfield formation.

The 20-year-old has been on loan to Raith Rovers and Bury FC and impressed with his performances. Apart from representing Rangers in a handful of games, he has played for the nation at various youth levels.

In terms of his attributes, Barjonas is strong midfield player with excellent passing range. He reads the game well, doesn’t mind going into tackles and can dribble past players with a good turn of pace on the ball.

The 20-year-old has the traits of becoming a commanding central midfield player for Rangers in the years to come. It would only happen, however, if he remains at the Ibrox and works for his opportunities in the first-team.
