Rangers simply cannot afford to let their 22-year-old starlet join Hibernian – agreed?

Rangers FC Opinion: Should the Gers keep Greg Docherty at the club?

The Daily Record has reported that Hibernian FC are keen on a rather shocking move for Rangers star Greg Docherty. While the 22-year-old has made a decent impact since his move to the Gers, manager Steven Gerrard has yet to decide his future.

However, despite the players that the Rangers have at their disposal, Docherty has the potential to outdo them. A talented and versatile player, the 22-year-old is currently out on loan with Shrewsbury Town and has done well for the club.

In 49 appearances this season, Docherty has managed to contribute 21 goals for the club. At the moment, that is the second-best total for Shrewsbury Town, with only Fejiri Okenabirhie doing better.

Docherty’s tally includes 10 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, including 7 and 8 respectively in the League One.

That still puts him amongst his loan club’s top three players and that shows the impact he’s had. Add that to his versatility to play everywhere in the midfield, and that further emphasises why the Rangers should keep him.

While Gerrard has added Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield, all three have failed to live up to the potential they’ve shown at their previous clubs. Arfield and Kamara have done well but at the same time, they have failed to do it on a consistent basis.

Davis is on loan from Southampton and well past his prime at the age of 34. Arfield himself is no spring chicken at 30 but his conversion into a central midfielder has worked wonders for him this season.

Yet, that is no reason to sell Greg Docherty but in fact, it shows why the club should keep him. They need another player to help out, given the long season that lies ahead.

His ability both on and off the ball is brilliant and combined with his agility, it allows him to move into spaces that shouldn’t normally be present.

That makes him a key component of any future that Steven Gerrard wants to have at the club, with the 22-year-old’s versatility an added bonus.

Conclusion

Rangers need Greg Docherty as much as Greg Docherty needs Rangers. They can have a very healthy relationship in the near future but only if Steven Gerrard keeps him at the club. Plus at the age of 22, he’s a long-term option and someone who can help them catch Celtic.
