Rangers snatching this classy 28-year-old on a free transfer would be a terrific coup for Steven Gerrard

Rangers opinion: Should the Gers make a move for Lewis Holtby

The Daily Record has reported that Rangers are more than ready to make a move for Lewis Holtby, as the club look to challenge Celtic for the title. At the moment, Celtic have a massive ten-point lead over second-placed Rangers, something that looks unassailable at the moment.

The Hoops, despite losing former manager Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City, have managed to do well in his absence. Steven Gerrard and Rangers however, have struggled comparatively, with nine draws and four losses to their name.

That’s probably why the club are chasing Holtby, especially with the 28-year-old’s current deal with Hamburg expiring at the end of the season. No contract extension has been agreed to and more importantly, the Bundesliga 2 club has revealed that the German will be leaving (Hamburg).

He arrived after a rather disastrous spell at Tottenham, where Holtby among many others was brought in to replace the outgoing Gareth Bale. Only a few players stuck around, with Holtby among the many that struggled to make an impact.

That was a big surprise to all involved, especially given his remarkable skill-set. An incredibly creative player, the German has the ability to spot a run even before it happens and is extremely dangerous in the final third.

However, as time and injuries took a toll on his body, Holtby changed from a number 10 to a deep-lying playmaker.

It’s there that the 28-year-old has flourished for Hamburg, despite the promise he showed as an aggressive and elegant number 10. It’s that ability that Rangers need.

However, what Holtby posses that only few Rangers stars have at their disposal is the ability to play incredible gorgeous passes. The 28-year-old has a brilliant left foot and uses it at his will, spraying passes left and right.

He is capable of lung-bursting runs from the midfield and has it in his locker to hit a brilliant set-piece when required. This is why signing him would be such a brilliant move, especially given the fact that he will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Rangers need whatever transfer budget they have to spend on other areas. At the moment, only Alfredo Morelos has done well and has been the main reason why the club are in this position.

While Jermain Defoe’s presence has been welcomed, the Bournemouth loanee is 36 years old and is not a permanent option.

Conclusion

Lewis Holtby will add that much-needed creativity and zest into the Rangers’ style of play and as a former Premier League player himself, Steven Gerrard knows exactly what the German can do.

It would be an absolute bargain to sign him as a free agent, as few players come as cheap and affordable as the former Schalke and Tottenham star.
