Why Rangers should sign this 25-year-old with 50 goals and 16 assists for Motherwell

Why Rangers Must Sign Louis Moult This Summer

Preston North End striker Louis Moult is back on the radar of Scottish giants Rangers FC, according to a report from the Daily Mail. The 25-year-old moved to England only in January this year but has been unable to make an impact since joining.

A Stoke City academy graduate, Moult left the Potters after having made a sole appearance for the senior team and a host of loan spells at lower league outfits. After stints at Northampton Town, Nuneaton Town and Wrexham AFC, the Englishman joined Motherwell in the summer of 2015, where his career really took off.

Moult managed 18 goals and 6 assists in 42 appearances in his first campaign at the Fir Park and was equally prolific in the 2016/17 campaign as well, notching up 18 strikes along with 7 assists in just 34 games.

The 25-year-old started off the ongoing campaign in a fine fashion as well, having already contributed 14 goals and 3 assists in 22 appearances for Motherwell in the first half of the season, before Preston signed him up at the turn of the year.

However, things haven’t gone as per plans for the striker since his return to England. So far in his spell at the Deepdale, Moult has made only seven appearances, only three of which have been from the start.

He is yet to get off the mark for his new club. Currently behind the likes of Callum Robinson and Sean Maguire in the order of preference, Moult’s last appearance for Preston came in the last week of February.

Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Moult in the summer but manager Pedro Caixinha opted to bring in the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Eduardo Herrera etc. Apart from the two, the club also have veteran forward Kenny Miller in their ranks along with Jason Cummings, who is on loan from Nottingham Forest.

While Morelos has been a huge success at the club, with 17 goals already this term, Herrera has been a major flop. Given that Cummings will be returning to Nottingham at the end of the season, and with Miller getting older, a new striker is definitely the need of the hour for Graeme Murty’s side.

Moult may not have been able to hit the ground running at Preston but remains a tried and tested option in the Scottish league. The 25-year-old managed to score 50 goals for Motherwell in 98 appearances along with 16 assists, which shows the level of consistency with which he had performed at the Fir Park.

So, if the striker becomes available at the end of the season, it would make total sense for Rangers to try and sign him as they look to knock rivals Celtic off their perch in the domestic arena.
