Why Sheffield Wednesday Over Derby Could Be The Ideal Destination For Versatile Englishman

Ben Marshall looks sure to leave Wolves in January and has already been a reported target for Fulham. However, it appears that promotion contenders Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County are also keen on the former Blackburn man and a battle may ensue for his signature.

Cardiff City are also apparently interested in a player who can pass the ball really well and is proven in this division, though the Owls and the Rams seem to share pole position just now.

Marshall has found things increasingly difficult at Molineux, gaining precious little time on the pitch under Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo. In fact, he has made just one Championship start this season and has been left out of the matchday squad for the last five league games.

Various promotion candidates are looking for reinforcements for the second half of the season and Marshall fits the bill for almost everybody in the league, though Wolves will not worry about that as they will privately feel that automatic promotion will not be a problem for them. In fact, they are set to add new players of their own.

Sheffield Wednesday are very much expected to spend in January despite doubts about continuing about their project under Carlos Carvalhal. With that in mind, it’s 50-50 as to whether Marshall would be walking into an improving team following the coach’s departure or whether there will be turmoil at the club.

Derby manager Gary Rowett is also an admirer of Marshall, which could give him another option and it was reported earlier in December that Derby may offer Chris Martin to Wolves as part-exchange.

If the deal were dependant on that, then it leaves Marshall in a vulnerable position as there are too many variables in the deal, meaning too many things which could go wrong, leaving him at a club for another four months where he cannot get a game.

Furthermore; Marshall likes to play on the left of the three in a 4-2-3-1 formation and that position is already occupied by Tom Lawrence at Derby.

All things considered then, it would make sense for Marshall to go to Sheffield Wednesday where he would undoubtedly get plenty of game time in a side which could still make the playoffs.
