Go for it Bielsa – Why signing Spurs youngster Juan Foyth on loan would be sensible for Leeds United

Championship outfit Leeds United have appointed Marcelo Bielsa as their new manager, following the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom earlier this month.

The signing of the former Argentina and Chile coach is a statement of intent from Leeds. After the blockbuster appointment, it is time for the club to get straight to business and sign players that can execute the new manager’s high-pressing style of play.

Marcelo Bielsa

The West Yorkshire outfit need reinforcements in order to achieve their objectives under Bielsa, who must improve his squad options. The central defence was a weak area last season and Leeds must look for at least one player in that department. That said, should Bielsa raid Tottenham Hotspur to sign Juan Foyth on loan?

After joining from Argentinian top division side Estudiantes last summer, Foyth has predominantly been a backup option for Spurs. The 20-year-old featured irregularly for Tottenham last season in cup competitions, making just 8 appearances.

At Spurs, it is difficult for Foyth to play regularly due to the presence of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez. Hence, a loan move could be the best possible thing for the young Argentine.

Bielsa should try bringing Foyth to Leeds. His previous connection with Mauricio Pochettino could help him to a great extent in doing so. The duo worked together during Bielsa’s time as the Argentina coach between 1998 and 2004.

Juan Foyth

Ball-playing centre-backs are ever-present features of Bielsa’s teams. Foyth is a ball-playing centre-back and his attributes are an ideal fit for Bielsa’s style of play. Working with the Argentine manager would benefit the 20-year-old mightily and help him develop his game.

Furthermore, Bielsa’s systems rely on cohesion, teamwork, aggressive pressing and commitment, meaning Foyth should find it fairly easy to adjust to life at Elland Road.

Thus, Pochettino should allow Foyth leave on loan to Leeds this summer. Bielsa could have an important influence on the defender’s game and help him iron out his flaws as well.

Bielsa’s appointment by Leeds is indeed a sensational move and if the veteran Argentine boss can make his high-throttle system work in the Championship, Leeds fans could experience something special next season.
