Southampton’s attack would get all the energy it needs by signing this lethal 27-year-old goal machine in January

Why Southampton should go all out to sign Vincent Aboubakar in January

Back in June 2017, a report from the Express had claimed that Southampton were interested in signing FC Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar. However, no deal materialised then.

Vincent Aboubakar, 27, suffered cruciate ligament injury last summer that saw him miss action for almost eight months for FC Porto. He returned from injury right at the business end of the season, making a couple of cameo appearances off the bench.

Having attained full fitness, Southampton should reignite their interest in the Cameroon striker when the transfer window reopens in January.

Southampton have endured a tough start to the new Premier League, with no victory at home so far. After beating the drop last season, the Saints are expected to improve and at least challenge for a top-10 finish. There is a lot of potential in the current squad and it is upon Ralph Hasenhuttl to help the players achieve potential.

First of all, the Saints need a clinical goalscorer to complement Che Adams or Danny Ings. Nathan Redmond, Moussa Djenepo have provided pace and creative spark in the final third but goals have not flown by as regularly as they should have this season.

Clearly, Hasenhuttl cannot completely rely on the likes of Ings and Adams to come up with goals regularly and that’s why he should target a striker in January.

Vincent Aboubakar, in that regard, would be an ideal fit for Southampton. Aboubakar is a tough player and can play with his back to his goal while holding up the ball and bringing his teammates into the game. The Cameroon international is quick, powerful and strong, good on both foot and a ruthless finisher when presented with a goalscoring opportunity.

The 27-year-old is one of those strikers who enjoys playing on the shoulder of the last defender. He likes to run the channels, finish off the chances with regularity and also link-up play with other attacking midfielders.

He can be an unforgiving presence inside the opposition penalty area as Aboubakar knows what it takes to find the back of the net.

The former Besiktas hitman would introduce a new dimension to the Southampton attack due to his agility, mobility and the ability to finish off a chance in one blink of an eye.

All in all, the Cameroonian would undoubtedly improve Southampton’s attacking ranks, whilst potentially forming a lethal unit with the likes of Adams, Djenepo and Redmond.

Verdict

A new centre-forward is a must, and if the Saints could manage to get their hands on Aboubakar, chances of Hasenhuttl’s side breaking into the top half of the table would certainly increase this season.
