Southampton winning the race to sign this 19-year-old hitman from Scotland would be a colossal move

Why Southampton should sign Motherwell starlet James Scott

According to the Chronicle Live, Southampton are amongst a host of English clubs monitoring 19-year-old Motherwell striker James Scott.

However, if the Saints are really serious about landing the Scottish U-21 international in the near future, they would need to beat off competition from Premier League sides Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Everton, as well as Championship and League One sides Bristol City, Barnsley and Sunderland. James Scott might not be a familiar name to the English fans but the highly-rated teenager is currently making waves with his rapid development north of the border and his stocks are currently on the rise following his Scotland U-21 debut during the most recent international break.

The Glasgow-born starlet, who rose through the youth ranks at Motherwell, made his first-team debut for the Fir Park outfit back in the 2017-18 season and featured sporadically for his boyhood club in the previous campaign.

However, the talented youngster has really come of age this term and has established himself in a more significant role in Motherwell’s senior ranks, with manager Steve Robinson showing plenty of faith in his abilities.

Most recently, the 19-year-old started on the right-hand side of the attack and helped Motherwell complete a 3-2 away victory over Hearts in the league.

Scott has already made a total of 10 appearances in all competitions thus far this term, scoring thrice in the process, although he is still awaiting his first league goal of the campaign.

The teenager is held in high regard by the coaching staff at Fir Park and has been tipped by many to go on and ply his trade at the highest level in the future.

The youngster is yet to set the stage on fire in Scotland but his rapid development and early signs of promise haven’t eluded the eyes of the Premier League clubs.

The lure of a move to the Premier League is likely to appeal to Scott but the prospect of regular minutes should be of paramount importance at this stage of his career.

To put things into perspective, Scott looks like a real talent at this stage of his career and Southampton could land themselves a future star if they manage to fend off interest from some of their Premier League rivals in the race to sign the Scottish prodigy.

Southampton have focussed largely on building a team around talented youngsters since the arrival of Ralph Hasenhuttl, with hot prospects like Che Adams and Moussa Djenepo coming through the door at St. Mary’s, while academy stars like Yan Valery, Kayne Ramsay and Michael Obafemi have also enjoyed more involvement.

The Saints have made their intentions very clear that they are trying to build a strong platform for the future and it is easy to see why and how the acquisition of James Scott would be a step in the right direction.

The 19-year-old could find regular minutes harder to come by in the Premier League but if he is really keen to build a career in English football, he might as well be open to the prospect of furthering his development south of the border.

Historically, Southampton have always favoured the exuberance of youth and with Hasenhuttl now in charge, the Saints are on the hunt to pluck out bright young talents from all corners of the globe.
