Why Spurs should spend big to sign Florian Thauvin?

Back in May last year, French outlet RMC claimed that Tottenham were one of the clubs interested in signing Marseille star, Florian Thauvin. (h/t France Football) However, a move didn’t materialise and Thauvin stayed with Marseille.

The Frenchman, 26, enjoyed a stellar campaign with Marseille as he scored 18 goals and assisted a further nine times in 37 games across all competitions. However, Sky Sports had reported in the summer that the winger is one of four players that the Ligue 1 outfit may need to sell to comply with Financial Fair play rules.

Keeping that in mind, Tottenham must reignite their interest in Florian Thauvin, who is valued at up to £50m after a solid Ligue 1 season, adds Sky Sports. The North Londoners already have one of the most dangerous attacks in the Premier League, but they could do with more firepower in attack to compete on all fronts. Florian Thauvin would be a great fit at Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino should give the winger another shot in the Premier League.

Thauvin struggled during his first spell in England with Newcastle United, with his performances often criticised. However, a move back to Marseille has been perfect for him, and he has managed to revive his career. Now considered as one of the best attackers in France, there is a certainty that the 26-year-old would make it big in England this time around.

A right-winger by trade, Thauvin can also operate in the no.10 role or on the left-wing. A sharp, agile and energetic presence down the flanks, the Frenchman combines his searing pace and quick acceleration with his silky dribbling skills to cut inside from the right and have a pop at the goal, whilst also possessing a good eye for key passes in the final third.

The ex-Newcastle man is a major goal threat and would add some more potency to Pochettino’s attack.

Verdict

Thauvin is hitting the peak of his career and the time could be ripe for Spurs to break the bank to acquire his signature. Truly, he could be a statement signing for the North London club.
