Swansea City winning the race to sign this 18-year-old Scottish gem for free would be quite a coup

Why Swansea City should beat others to sign starlet Owen McGinty

According to The Scottish Sun, Swansea City are among a host of English clubs tracking Scottish starlet Owen McGinty, who is currently a free agent after his release from Ayr United. 

As well as Swansea City, League One promotion-hopefuls Sunderland and Premier League outfit Bournemouth are also keeping close tabs on the 18-year-old winger (h/t Scottish Sun).

Born in Largs, a small town in North Ayrshire, Scotland, Owen McGinty started his footballing education at local non-league side Crosshouse BC, where eye-watering returns of 135 goals in a single campaign paved the way for a move to Rangers.

The teenage starlet went on to feature for various age-group sides in Rangers’ academy and caught the eye with his rapid development, netting a staggering 12 goals in just 5 games against their Celtic counterparts, including a hat-trick in the Glasgow Cup at Lennoxtown.

The 18-year-old was also instrumental in the Gers’ triumphant Youdan Youth Cup campaign at Bramall Lane, Sheffield. 

McGinty returned to his hometown with Ayr United and played for the club’s U18 side but he is currently not registered with any club.

Sunderland already have a strong Scottish contingent in their squad, with Dylan McGeouch, Marc McNulty, Chris Maguire and John McLaughlin all hailing from north of the border.

To put things into perspective, Swansea City already have some exciting up and coming talents in their first-team and the Welsh outfit would bag a real coup if they manage to beat off competition from their rivals to sign Owen McGinty. 

Verdict

Steve Cooper, who was previously in charge of England U17s, has illustrated his proficiency in extracting the best out of young players like Bersant Celina, Yan Dhanda, Connor Roberts, Joe Rondon, Ben Wilmot and Freddie Woodman at the Liberty Stadium.

McGinty could be the next in the queue to enjoy the fruits of the manager’s ability to transform youngsters into quality professionals.

Plus, it is worth mentioning here that the Swans have an excellent track record of promoting young talent in their first-team.

McGinty, of course, is still only 18 and in the formative years of his career, meaning that the Swans would need to keep a close eye on his development in the academy ranks.
