Why Che Adams Would Be Better Off Leaving Birmingham City In The Summer

Che Adams first burst on to the scenes when he scored two goals for Sheffield United against Tottenham Hotspur to almost make the League Cup final in January 2015.

The powerful attacking midfielder has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in the past, with top Championship teams like Derby and Fulham attempting to secure his services last summer.

He is still currently a Birmingham City player but if the Blues go down, it could mean trouble. Conversely, I feel that new manager Garry Monk may think twice about retaining a player who has been in patchy form for the West Midlands club, especially if they could gather a big transfer fee to move him on.

Former Ilkeston player Che Adams has started 12 games this season and has been on the bench 13 times as well. Neither of his former managers – Harry Redknapp and Steve Cotterill, has trusted the young attacker at various points in his Birmingham career. As a player, he has a lot of promise but he’s yet to show that promise on a consistent basis.

The 21-year-old has 7 goals in total this season but has just one assist. This is perhaps normal in a Birmingham team that has not been able to get going at any point.

However, Adams got that assist against Hull, where he also scored and bullied the Hull defenders, playing as a second striker alongside Lucas Jutkiewicz. He has the chance to be very effective and if he were to save Birmingham’s season, he would be much more marketable in the transfer market.

Adams has also struggled with the defensive element of his game, so playing him as a number 10 means that a team can feel disjointed.

However, the player has a wicked long shot and at the age of just 21, still has a lot to learn. The fact that he has come from non-league also gives him a Jamie Vardy-esque bite. He is clearly a talented player and could thrive in a team more organised than Birmingham. Perhaps next season is his chance.
