Why Anthony Martial Would Flourish At Tottenham Under Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a move for Anthony Martial in the summer with the Manchester United winger expected to be looking for a move away from Old Trafford this summer.

Martial started this campaign in fine fashion, appearing to have rediscovered the mojo he boasted under manager Louis van Gaal. However, his form has waned following the January arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal. The £65,000-a-week Frenchman has endured a mixed campaign, which has seen him score 9 times in 30 Premier League appearances.

With Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez both sidelined against Brighton, Jose Mourinho handed Martial a start on the left. It was the perfect chance for the 22-year-old to prove his mettle as to why he should be a regular starter at United but he failed to grab the opportunity.

Since slipping down the pecking order following the arrival of Sanchez, Martial seemed to have lost the spark and it was visible against Brighton. At times, he looked unbothered when United were 1-0 down and chasing the game. Martial looked anonymous in the defeat at Brighton.

Well, this could be the ideal time for Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham to start planning for the addition Martial to their ranks.

Tottenham have one of the best strikers in the league in Harry Kane but the potential arrival of Martial would make them genuine title contenders next season. It would be a statement of intent from Spurs, who, although have challenged for the title, have faded towards the business end of the season under Pochettino in the last couple of seasons.

After United signed Sanchez in January, Martial has not enjoyed much time on the pitch as he would have hoped for. The Frenchman has shown flashes of brilliance while he has been at United but the 22-year-old needs to be a guaranteed starter week in and week out to unlock his true potential.

There is no doubting the talent that Martial possesses. He is considered as one of the exciting young attacking prospects in European football but Mourinho has simply failed to utilise the nimble-footed Frenchman.

In contrast, Pochettino has developed a reputation for nurturing young talents and Martial, who is a supremely gifted forward with top-notch dribbling skills and blistering pace, will finally get a manager capable of getting the best out of him.

Spurs need to ease Kane’s pressure by finding another player to score goals at a premium rate. While Son Heung-min has done a fantastic job this season, Martial’s addition would further ease the burden on Kane and also provide extra competition.

One stumbling block could be Spurs’ inability to pay a higher fee and better wages. Martial would definitely command a huge pay to leave United but Tottenham must not lose hope.

Following Martial’s horror show at Brighton, it is clear that he is not in the right frame of mind to fight for his place at Old Trafford. Maybe, he needs a change in surrounding and Tottenham could be the ideal destination this summer.
