Why Cenk Tosun Would Do Well To Snub Wolfsburg And Join Newcastle United

Wolfsburg have reportedly submitted a £9m bid to Besiktas for Newcastle United target Cenk Tosun. The player is the latest to be linked with a slew of clubs but the Magpies were believed to be the frontrunners. However, things will take an interesting turn now with the Bundesliga club in the fray.

Tosun was a product of Eintracht Frankfurt’s youth system, joining their academy setup in 1997. The striker was prolific at every youth level for the German side, scoring 20 goals in 40 games for the under-19 side, as well as 12 goals in 17 games for the reserves. He joined Besiktas in 2014 and he has gone from strength to strength, helping the club to back-to-back Turkish Super Lig titles and competing in elite-level European competition.

The 26-year-old Besiktas star scored 20 goals in 33 league outings last term, which has made him a hot prospect. Wolfsburg have made a disappointing start to the season so far, having collected just 9 points. Tosun could prove to be a vital addition to a squad like that, especially since he can partner well with Mario Gomez in the attack. However, should he take up the offer or consider joining Newcastle United?

A new forward could do wonders for Newcastle too. They are currently embarking on an upward journey as far as the league table is concerned. Joselu has proven to be far from the prolific striker the Magpies need in order to reach the next level, and Tosun’s goal tally at Beskitas suggests he would be a risk worth taking. Moreover, Tosun would also prove to be better with his finishing when compared to Dwight Gayle or Aleksandar Mitrovic. Another big advantage that could come from signing Tosun is his versatility. He can use his feet extremely well and doesn’t have a preference.

The club may not have spent big over the summer but if they are willing to go the extra mile in January, it could give them a welcome boost before the season ends. Tosun’s contract situation also means his price tag could be relatively cheap, with just 18 months remaining on his contract by January. Thus, Newcastle could benefit by attempting to sign the goal-scoring hitman in the winter transfer window.

Moreover, when compared in terms of performances, Newcastle are currently faring a lot better than Wolfsburg. Benitez has remarkably changed the club to a new-look side filled with fresh energy and attacking strength – something which will be accentuated further if they manage to sign Tosun as well.
