Why This Argentine Linked With Manchester United And Chelsea Should Prefer The Red Devils Ahead Of The Blues

The transfer window is still a few months away, but teams are already planning their next purchases, there is no rest for any club in the competitive world of football and there are always clubs on the lookout for the next big thing to help their team.

Mauro Icardi is the player who seems to be on the wish list of a lot of top clubs, the Argentine striker who plays for Inter Milan was rumoured to be a target in the summer for Liverpool, but that never materialized, however, it seems the striker could still be on his way to the Premier League with a couple of top clubs fighting it out for his coveted signature.

London or Manchester?

The 21 year old is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in Serie A, which has been blessed with a lot of young strikers in the past. Mario Balotelli, Erik Lamela, Paolo Dybala, Stephen El Sharaawy to name a few, the striker would command a price tag of around £25 million come the end of the season and has been one of the few bright sparks in a dire season for Inter Milan.

Icardi is 5’11 inches tall and struggles to win the aerial duels due to his size; he isn’t a centre forward that likes to win headers or even take part in aerial duels and prefers to let his feet do the talking for him. Icardi is creative though and has always made chances for his team mates, so he is more like a creator rather than a scorer but he is adept at taking chances as well.

A couple of clubs, racing for his signature are Manchester United and Chelsea, however Icardi would fit into just one team or in a better sense, he would fit into the starting line-up of one team better. While Chelsea would be the preferred destination for the Argentine to win trophies, they have a system which uses Diego Costa and they need someone who not only makes the runs behind the opposition defence, but is willing to do a bit of the dirty work and be a physical presence for the team up front. Icardi unfortunately does not provide the physicality that Chelsea need, he could be used as an alternate option to change the style of play but he wouldn’t be able to play in the system that Chelsea deploys.

Manchester United should be a better choice for Icardi to play in, Louis Van Gaal does need a good striker to help his team, it seems that time is up for Radamel Falcao, who was substituted at half time in the recent FA Cup win over Preston. Also Robin Van Persie is not getting any younger and does not have the pace to trouble defences anymore, playing Icardi up front for Manchester United would be great. He would give them a creative outlet and could even play behind the strikers, in a role that Wayne Rooney has been occupying this season. The big question is are United willing to break the bank to sign the player?
