Why Cardiff City’s Sean Morrison Would Be The Perfect Solution For Leeds’ Defensive Woes

Leeds United are once again in trouble.  True ‘trouble’ in Leeds’ case doesn’t mean a relegation scrap but each year, just when they think they are on course for promotion, some sort of off-field trouble hits and they end up struggling to make up ground on the top six.

This is once again the case and with Thomas Christiansen, yet another manager was not given time to get things right in English football. It now falls to Paul Heckingbottom to recover the situation and attempt to drag Leeds into the playoff picture when April comes around.

They have had their issues at the attacking end of the field. Kemar Roofe for my money is being played out of position as a makeshift striker as opposed to starting on the left where he puts in his best shifts. In this case, his output takes a hit.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga is full of talent but is somewhat of an enigma while players like Samu Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski have shown fleeting ability but also let themselves down at times.

It’s at the back however where the worst problems are. Last season, Leeds had a more settled backline; Luke Ayling improving nicely at right-back, Rob Green performing alright in goal, Charlie Taylor gaining a reputation at left-back while a cracking centre-back partnership between Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson had formed.

This year, some were not keen on the club’s decision to allow Rob Green to leave and be replaced by Felix Wiedwald, Ayling is injured, Charlie Taylor got his wish to leave the club and Kyle Bartley returned to Swansea City. The permanent signing of Pontus Jansson was a positive but he has struggled to keep with him a solid defensive partner and should he stay beyond this summer, that is surely something the big Swede will demand.

So, who could Leeds realistically go for?  Well, assuming they are still a Championship team I would throw in the name of Sean Morrison of Cardiff City. The 6ft 4in centre-back has been outstanding this season, albeit in a well-drilled back line at the Cardiff City stadium. But he is still improving and is looking every inch a Premier League defender.

Should he prove to be the type who could be tempted away from Cardiff, then he could form a scarily tall and strong central defensive partnership at Elland Road which could be the basis for a proper promotion push next time around.
