Why This Forgotten Spanish Star Can Be A Good Signing For Chelsea

All the top clubs in the Premier League are trying to strengthen their squad in the current transfer window, prior to the start of the new season. A lot of money has already been spent and could be utilized in the upcoming days for the same purpose, as Antonio Conte looks to make his managerial debut in England. The Blues will be keen on adding a number of players in the upcoming days, after a horrific last season which they endured.

There were claims at the end of the previous campaign that Belgian international Thibaut Courtois was eager to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Despite that, since the Euros were concluded, these rumours died down and it was added that the former Atletico Madrid man would be staying in west London and playing under Conte next term.

However, there is still a need for a backup keep at Chelsea, with Asmir Begovic recently being linked with a move to Everton, who were looking to bring about a major chance under new boss Ronald Koeman.

Due to this, the former champions of England were keen on bringing AC Milan’s Diego Lopez to England, who had lost his place in the starting eleven at the San Siro.

The 34-year-old Spaniard has been offered a 3-year-old deal by the Londoners and could be a really good backup to Courtois if Begovic does indeed leave for Goodison.

Lopez is quite experienced and has played for La Liga giants like Real Madrid, Villarreal and Sevilla. He has made more than 350 appearances at the club level and can be quite a useful backup.

Begovic did not look too confident at goal in the previous campaign when he was asked to fill in the shoes of Courtois, during his injury. Though the 29 year old Bosnian international made some good saves at times, he was not as dominant at the back and could not command his defence well, which cost Chelsea at times.

This shows the difference in the class and experience of playing at the top level between him and a keeper like Petr Cech or Courtois and it is necessary for Conte that he has more such players in his squad, who depict leadership qualities naturally.

For this purpose, a keeper like Lopez would surely be handy with his vast knowledge of the game and his time on the pitch over the years, in case the first choice keeper is injured.

He has not been given a lot of game time in Serie A and made just 9 appearances in total in all competitions for Milan last season, which might make it easy for the former Juve boss to take him away from Italy.

It will be interesting to see what happens next in this chase, as the new season slowly approaches.
