Why Harry Winks Should Ignore Barcelona Interest And Stay Put With Tottenham
Harry Winks was easily one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most outstanding performances against Real Madrid in their recent Champions League encounter, and his form has grabbed the attention of Barcelona. In fact, the Catalan giants are believed to be lining up a possible January move for the young midfielder.
Winks, a self-confessed boyhood Spurs fan, looks likely to stay with Tottenham for the long-term but the youngster could find an offer from Barcelona quite enticing. In fact, it is a sign of his rapid progress that he now has admirers at one of the world’s most successful clubs, and a chance to play for Barcelona will undoubtedly be a huge opportunity.
The talented midfielder is still in the early stages of his career. Interestingly, this is the first season in which the 21-year-old has been a regular starter and his sole focus is on Tottenham. The north London club are likely to offer him a new contract, his third in little more than a year, and that will earn him a significant pay rise. But should the player accept a lucrative offer from Barcelona?
One of the most amazing parts about the Champions League is how youngsters often get catapulted into the limelight, following which they usually engage in big-money moves to join some of the biggest clubs. Take a look at how Kylian Mbappe’s stock rose after last season’s Champions League. Now, he plays for Paris Saint-Germain and it seems like Harry Winks is the latest to be added to that list.
There is certainly a dire need for reinforcements for Barcelona. The La Liga giants sold star man Neymar for a world record fee of £200m and purchased Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, who is currently nursing a long-term injury.
Andres Iniesta is also approaching his twilight years, and although the Catalans have been quite strong, they could do with some fresh recruits. Signing Winks would most certainly act as an upgrade for the club but it remains to be seen if the youngster would be keen on joining.
Of course, Barcelona could attempt to lure him with more money but Winks still has to develop further before he can think of making a switch like this. While there are success stories, there are also stories of how once-hyped youngsters failed to live up to their billing after completing moves to bigger clubs.
In another year or two, perhaps it would be ideal for Winks to move. At present though, he is making remarkable progress at Spurs under the watchful eye of Mauricio Pochettino and it would be better for him to continue doing so.
