Why Timo Werner Will Be An Epic Signing For Liverpool In January

After suffering a 5-0 hammering against league counterparts Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool had to settle for a 2-2 draw with midweek opponent Sevilla. Their defensive frailty is still under scrutiny, particularly after failing to bring in Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton, their prime summer transfer target, which has left Klopp’s backline in a limbo. They will reportedly go after the Dutchman once again in winter.

Liverpool, however, have been linked with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner who has been in scintillating form for both club and country since joining the Bundesliga outfit last summer from league counterparts VfB Stuttgart. The 21-year-old Germany international has netted 25 times in 36 club appearances whereas he has scored 6 goals in 8 games for Die Mannschaft. He played a key role in Germany’s 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup triumph and was awarded the Golden Boot for netting 3 goals and 2 assists.

The Reds were pursuing a deal for Werner early in the summer but shifted their focus to his teammate Naby Keita. Ralf Rangnick, the Leipzig sporting director, was adamant not to lose their high-profile midfield sensation who played a major role to secure a second-placed league finish last season for the then newly promoted outfit. Both clubs, meanwhile, came to an agreement late in the window where Liverpool agreed to terms with RB Leipzig for the Guinean international, that will allow him to join the Reds next summer.

Werner is also being monitored by European giants Real Madrid and there will be offers for him in winter. Klopp, a keen admirer of Werner’s quality, might go for him as well but considering RB Leipzig’s participation in the prestigious Champions League competition, there are little chances of acquiring the forward before next summer.

Liverpool currently have enough depth in their attack, with Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and youngster Dominic Solanke available for selection. Danny Ings is also regaining his fitness from successive season-ending injury blows whereas young Belgian forward Divock Origi has been loaned to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg for regular minutes.

In spite of the long list of options, Liverpool are still lacking a 25-goal-a-season forward due to injury concerns of hitman Daniel Sturridge. Roberto Firmino is having a decent run up front but the Brazilian is far from being an orthodox goal-poaching striker. Timo Werner, thus, will be a fitting response to Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata, Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku, Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus as well as Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur.

Werner has already netted four times this season in four outings and it is highly unlikely for Liverpool to land him in winter. If they do (as well as sort out their defensive vulnerability), the Merseyside Reds will be strong enough contenders to lift the Premier League title.
