Man United signing this German speedster would instantly solve their goalscoring woes

Why Timo Werner would be a brilliant addition to Manchester United

According to a report from Daily Express, Manchester United are targeting RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in the January transfer window.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer offloaded misfits Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan this summer but failed to bring in a replacement, leaving his team desperately short in the striker department.

After scoring four past Chelsea on the Premier League’s opening gameweek, United have failed to score more than once in a game. Marcus Rashford remains the club’s leading striker, but two of his three goals have come from the penalty spot, whereas his partner Anthony Martial hasn’t played since the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace due to a hamstring problem.

Mason Greenwood has emerged as a rising star for United this season. The teenage sensation scored his first senior goal in United’s 1-0 win over Astana in their Europa League opener a fortnight ago.

He then followed it up with a goal against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup. However, he has just turned 18 and it won’t be fair to put a lot of burden on his young shoulders.

With United in desperate need of players, none of them they want will come on the cheap though, especially, Timo Werner, who signed a new contract with RB Leipzig until 2023.

Werner, 23, is rated among Europe’s best strikers and has regularly found the net in the Bundesliga. He is the German national team’s main striker and is considered a major talent. He has enjoyed a scintillating start to the new season, bagging seven goals in eight games already across all competitions.

The Germany international can play anywhere across the front-line but he is at his lethal best when played through the middle. An accomplished finisher, Werner can pick his moments superbly to destroy the opposition as he is a very good reader of the game.

The 23-year-old is blessed with spatial awareness, and that combined with his intelligent movement, searing pace and anticipation make him such a difficult customer to deal for the defenders.

The former Stuttgart ace would offer Solskjaer something totally different in the final third, and he could make all the difference for Manchester United over the next few years. As he can play as a secondary striker, he could forge a devastating partnership with Martial up top.

Verdict

Attacking from a deeper position, blindsiding defences and always with that tune of blistering pace, Werner on current form is the hottest commodity in Germany. Thus, United must do everything to their powers to sign the German in January to solve their goalscoring woes.
